Interesting point. I don’t even know what we are contracted to pay him but even if it was 5M/Y, a 3Y 3M/Y would pay more and keep him actively in the league. Haven’t read all comments yet, but from what I’ve seen I agree about him being a better alternative than some other hires around the league. I think a lot of people who don’t like him as a coach feel that way because they think we should have seen more success with those rosters during his time.
Stotts got more out of Aldridge in that offense than Pop did. Look at how Aldridges stats improved with Stotts compared to McMillan. Allen Crabbe… Harkless… Theres an official list of players which looked better here in that offense. Yes, who they had around them on the floor was different, and that’s a big reason why people would turn towards Stotts to explain why we weren’t able to go further in the playoffs during that time. But a lot of it is getting what you can out of players, which I personally feel like Stotts excelled at.
McMillan is definitely the same in that regard though, which is why it’s interesting to look at him compared to Stotts. Coach Nate’s time here, and after; compared to Stotts time here. Nate McMillan is one of the better coaches in the league at developing young talent into NBA players. But when it comes to matchups and a long series, it’s always going to come down to player talent because he’s probably not winning the adjustments and game control categories.
I liked Stotts but he had zero in game adjustments. Offensively it was high pick and roll over and over. He wasn’t respected enough by the players for them to commit to defense. Everything starts and ends with head coach. I’m guessing he’s respected enough to get interview but the gm’s know he’s not a tier 1 or 2 coach.
I listened to the Jazz beat writers talk about why they should hire Terry and they made a ton of sense...many players had career years under him. He coached 179 different players for the Blazers and all said they loved him ...they had a detailed breakdown of how Terry could get the most out of players like Harkless and Chief....but sadly after Wes went down Terry never had a good enough roster to go far....the fact that he took a one armed Enes Kanter and Evan Turner squad to the WCF is quite remarkable. I have a lot of respect for Terry. He wasn't our glaring issue...his boss was. When Terry coached LA, Nico Wes Dame and Rolo he had a top 10 defense...with Mario Hezonja and Tolliver....not at all
It’s really hard to argue. It makes sense why a change was made, and how because of his experience, Chauncey is an understandable hire. This year will be pretty telling in all honesty. You’d think that if it were logical to look at a future rebuild around Sharpe, that we wouldn’t need to rebuild around him. We could use an Ayton-Nurk swap at C. I love Nurk, but I would have made that trade by most any means possible. If Sharpe from what inside scouting saw is capable of being a generational talent, then he should be able to be a reliable option as a starter. At which point you start talking about the coach and how plays are ran for players to get their looks. What do most 2’s/3’s do on offense? Go into the corners and Maybe they move to the other side when the ball rotates… We should expect plenty of 3’s and lobs to Sharpe if things pan out. Offense can be fairly straightforward in the league. Some coaches schemes are probably a lot less complicated. But the thing is, when the player cuts compared to when the other player screens on the other side of the court makes a lot of difference.
Off-Topic Steve Kerr is one of the greatest NBA players of all time. One of the greatest coaches of all time. Champion coach, champion player. Understands the game all around. Without googling I honestly don’t even know if he’s been inducted. Has he? He will be…
For the record, I’d rather listen to Mark Jackson than Hubie at this point. But I feel like Jackson is more replaceable.
Player/Coach Because his success speaks for itself. As a Player you really couldn’t have asked for much more out of his roll contributing to the Bulls championships. Maybe some would say that he’s been carried by the Players, but that’s the grand mystery right?
This is possibly a more accurate statement than you may have intended. Even though teams haven't seen it yet because of Dame's injury, I'm sure that there have to be executives around the league that feel that Dame carrying Stotts's dead weight held him back... I know I do. Obviously Olshey's team building has impeded Dame's ascent more than Stotts's noncoaching and even Stotts being around so long could be tied back into Olshey. That being said, I don't think many executives around the league think that Terry propelled Dame to higher places but rather held him back by not coming up with solutions for the blitzes and by not having a more active offense and defense around him that would have taken pressure off of him, raising his assist totals and increasing his efficiency.
You don’t think he will be inducted? I’d bet you on that… No more than $100, but the wise man would realize the odds that you pay me if you don’t think he does Vs the odds I pay you if he doesn’t. IDK dude maybe in the year 2344 Kerr will be inducted.
Going into a crucial season for us and our future this year. Let’s hope what we have with a healthy Dame can get HCA. Last season can have somewhat of a pass… IDK about this year.
To me his greatest coaching attribute is showing confidence in his players and coaches to their strengths instead of making players fit a certain mold. Seems like Billups will be same type of coach.
