Sure...so you get the difference between an introductory media session and a media session discussing firing a GM? Timing......and showing some respect to the new players matters..you can actually write to the team yourself on their hompage and express your disappointments or ask your questions. I think fishing for holes in their game plan is a waste of time personally ..and for the record....I'm not a fan of most Portland sports coverage at all...not a lot of talent in that group from what I've seen....I trust Casey for updates more than any of the others. He answers any questions I have pretty much when he can. I don't trust the youtube crowd to be the voice of reason though and they're a loud crowd
Regardless, the hard cap should have been asked about. The luxury tax should have been asked about. This definitely felt like Joe addressing the media about his offseason moves and I think both of those things fall well under the purview of offseason moves. I also think there should have been some followup questions about roster construction, especially the lack of size on the roster. Those definitely aren't dickish questions and wouldn't have to come across as accusatory or critical but it wouldn't be bad journalism if they did. Honestly I think they were basic due diligence that for some reason the people covering our team consistently neglect.
or how about this basic one? Is an extension going out to Dame and will he sign? Does that fall under the tenet of FA only questions?
I actually don't see any difference from a journalistic standpoint. Their job is to inform the people. This press conference was not only to introduce these players but Joe also made it about recapping the offseason. So why would there be a reasonable expectation that there would be another time to ask about the hard cap, ask about the luxury tax or ask about Bledsoe's contract being stretched? These guys can email Joe all they want but that likely won't get an answer and if it does, it doesn't happen in front of the public. It was rude for whoever that was to ask Grant the question about not being the number one option anymore in the manor that they did. It wouldn't be rude after congratulating the players on being Blazers or getting their new contracts to take the very rare opportunity to publicly address other offseason questions. Maybe you have knowledge of another presser coming up where Joe will be there and ask for open questions from the media. I'm just not aware of when the next time that will happen will be.
If he was asked about the tax, he'd have likely pointed out that we're currently over the tax, that Jody is committed to spending to win I'd we can win. And people would have flamed him for it. Or, he could say hey, we're currently in the tax, so obviously Jody is ok with it, but if we start to suck, then why pay the tax for a loser? And people would have flamed him for it.
I don't have a problem with Joe getting flamed. I actually like the way he's addressed everything. I don't think the reporters there asking questions should be concerned with how they'll make Joe look as long as they ask them respectfully. I get why Joe wouldn't want the questions asked, I just don't get why they weren't asked.
Do you honestly think they will have another? I mean, if that press conference has been set up and the reporters know about it, then this all makes sense. I just seriously doubt they're planning on having that presser.
i mean... Public and media relations is a part of the job, no? we want to treat him with kid gloves now? I would bet anything Olshey woulda been killed universally for the "heart" comment.
Pure speculation on your part, you don't know this. Sharpe, Hart, Little, 6 years of unprotected picks, 3rd teams involved, the Blazers have assets that many teams don't have. Sure you could be right, but you could be wrong. Especially if KD started working with Dame to pressure the Nets just as Grant did to the Pistons. We won't know this until likely December at the earliest, as its currently mathematically impossible to trade for Durant unless Dame is in the deal.
OK, so as long as you know those above mentioned have NO affiliation whatsoever with the team. Still cracks me up you took the time to point out I didn’t type a K. Who the fuck are you bro…HA!
I dont mean treat him with kid gloves. Was more pointing out how no matter what he responded to the questions people wanted asked, people wouldn't have been happy with the reply. So it's almost like asking for something to happen to give one am excuse to complain.
So instead of asking him this question, a very reasonable question that other markets media would ask, all we get is a bunch of posters arguing about what Joe would say. Its not hard to ask basic questions about the teams roster construction. Maybe the GM gives a non-answer or evades the question, maybe not and he provides insight. That's what a press conference is for, to get that clarity or get that question pushed aside from the man in charge.
Joe was asked about roster construction and answered it clearly...he said we're always looking to get better and make trades that'll make us better but we feel we have a core we can grow with with these guys now..and we're going to make other teams nervous. ....he didn't say anything about being done, etc....he could be negotiating a deal right now but he's not going to bring that up
No they won't in this case, but I agree with Riverman it would be better if the Blazers did this. Such as have the players introduced, do pictures, have the media give them questions, media question joe and chauncy on the players, then have those players exit the podium. Then Joe and Chauncy could give their offseason remarks with questions.
