When are they going to be putting humans on the invasive species list? All feral humans should be euthanized as well.
There are probably some who think that would be a great solution to the homelessness crisis. Seems a tad extreme to me.
The introduction by Scottish sailors to New Zealand of cats wiped out a whole lot of land birds ..slow moving easy prey...it's why the Dodo bird went extinct there...cats are absolutely to New Zealand an invasive species just as rabbits became in Australia by overpopulating and stressing the food supply
Good. I love cats, but only keep them indoors. I've seen what a couple of feral cats can do to a Least Tern nesting colony 200 breeding adults strong.
https://www.oregonlive.com/news/202...ies-a-polish-scientific-institute-claims.html WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A respected Polish scientific institute has classified domestic cats as an “invasive alien species,” citing the damage they cause to birds and other wildlife. Some cat lovers have reacted emotionally to this month’s decision and put the key scientist behind it on the defensive. Wojciech Solarz, a biologist at the state-run Polish Academy of Sciences, wasn’t prepared for the disapproving public response when he entered “Felis catus,” the scientific name for the common house cat, into a national database run by the academy’s Institute of Nature Conservation. The database already had 1,786 other species listed with no objections, Solarz told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The uproar over invasive alien species No. 1,787, he said, may have resulted from some media reports that created the false impression his institute was calling for feral and other cats to be euthanized. Solarz described the growing scientific consensus that domestic cats have a harmful impact on biodiversity given the number of birds and mammals they hunt and kill. The criteria for including the cat among alien invasive species, “are 100% met by the cat,” he said. In a television segment aired by independent broadcaster TVN, the biologist faced off last week against a veterinarian who challenged Solarz’s conclusion on the dangers cats pose to wildlife. Dorota Suminska, the author of a book titled “The Happy Cat,” pointed to other causes of shrinking biodiversity, including a polluted environment and urban building facades that can kill birds in flight. “Ask if man is on the list of non-invasive alien species,” Suminska said, arguing that cats were unfairly assigned too much blame. Solarz pushed back, arguing that cats kill about 140 million birds in Poland each year. Earlier this month, the Polish Academy institute published a post on its website citing the “controversy” and seeking to clarify its position. The institute stressed that it was “opposed to any cruelty towards animals.” It also argued that its classification was in line with European Union guidelines. As far as categorizing cats as “alien,” the institute noted that “Felis catus” was domesticated probably around 10,000 years ago in the cradle of the great civilizations of the ancient Middle East, making the species alien to Europe from a strictly scientific point of view. The institute also stressed that all it was recommending was for cat owners to limit the time their pets spend outdoors during bird breeding season. “I have a dog, but I don’t have anything against cats,” Solarz said.
I'll only speak for my country not others; introduced species are a big problem here, and cause great damage to native flora and fauna. We have huge problems with feral rabbits, cane toads, camels (worlds largest wild camel population), horses, water buffalo, dogs, and cats. In many local council areas it's illegal for your cat to leave your property off leash, and these bylaws are becoming more common. Cat owners in these areas either keep their cats inside at all times, build cat runs in their yards (like big aviarys), or place rollers or mesh on top of their fences so their cat can't jump/climb over. https://theconversation.com/austral...-explains-how-but-doesnt-go-far-enough-154931 This is what people in the outback do to feral cats (cat lovers don't look). Spoiler
I don't personally know anyone who hates cats, but almost everyone I know dislikes irresponsible cat owners.
Since my pets are gone, no more cats or dogs the wildlife has thrived around my property...I put out wild bird seed and scratch for them ..the birds this spring learned to fly before they got munched on. Rabbits, quail and deer all live on my old growth back acre with the creek. I left a qtr acre of grass to go to seed to feed the deer, they seem to sleep in it at night. Hawks have chased the crows away these days and the owls are doing well. I do enjoy my sons two golden retrievers and his cat when I house sit for him from time to time. Wonderful animals. I don't have to feed them or pickup their poop everyday at least! I have a wonderful half dozen chickens that are almost fully grown and just starting to lay eggs...I built them two chicken coops and a chicken run with an enclosed wire mest roof that nothing can get into..wasn't tight enough last year and lost my hens ...not this time.
