    I didn’t want it both ways…I would have rather not traded a 1st for a role player…

I think Grant is going to be good, but not an All Star. It's possible he won't make the team any better than if the Blazers had used Winslow and Little and Jabari Walker at power forward. Grant seems to be the weakest of those 4 at rebounding. Probably the best at shooting, and Billups seems to be leaning toward offense much more than defense despite what he says.

Huh? What did that have to do with my response to what you said? Did you think I literally meant I would only trade 1sts if they’re an AS like meaning they had to have made an AS game one time?

Com’on man, are you really going to pretend all role players are created equal and also not consider context at all?

Grant was traded for a MIL pick 3 years from now and Nance was traded for a #15th pick at worst. You do realize Nance was traded for more than Grant right (I’ll add the caveat that Giannis is healthy in 2025 cause right now you seem like the guy who would forget context)?

Edit: didn’t realize you weren’t the guy I responded to.

Olshey traded three 1st round picks for RoCo and Nance.....geeeezuz. In fact, he traded four 1st round picks + Will Barton for Afflalo, RoCo, and Nance. He loved those role players just so long as he could keep CJ as the starting SG

Should probably include two firsts for Zach Collins in there too.

I wouldn’t. At the time, I didn’t mind it because we thought he was going to be our starting PF and seemingly was growing into that guy. In hindsight, it still wasn’t terrible considering you can’t predict injuries and 15 and 20 ended up becoming Jackson and Giles.

Who is to say we would have taken those guys? Plenty of talent at 10, 15 and 20, hell even 26.

It was a complete whiff that would have changed the course of the franchise if we would have made the right pick.

OK, I will say what a lot of people are thinking. Pushing to be 9th or 10th in a 15 team conference is just pathetic. In what reality is that a successful season? Multiple seasons in the 9-12 range is a bigger failure than 1 season at 15th.

Actually, with the new play-in silliness only the top 6 spots could be considered successful.

yeah, I kind of forgot about that...too painful I guess because that 2017 draft was a real disater of missed opportunities for Portland

so that makes the tally, six 1st round picks + Will Barton for Afflalo, Zach, RoCo, and Nance....yuck

The NBA is trying to go World Cup Soccer with their marketing approach. From expanded playoffs with huge tv contracts because of fan interest drives the economics that keep it rolling with enhanced interest. The product is segmented like the automobile industry anymore, something and a good fit for everyone with lots of available brands.
The NBA usually has 4/5 legit contenders each year and the others all compete to have a chance to rock the world. Those fans are the segment that purchases a mid market car because its what they can afford and feel good about. Not everyone can afford a Lexus or MB.

Not all fan bases that support their teams expect championships just a chance.
Vegas does the same come gamble enjoy and you never know.
Look MLB now, they generated more interest by markets, same will happen with expanded college football playoffs. No esy going back to the bowl concept with one team voted#1. Doesn't create brand equity and revenue with limited markets every year.

That’s why in a year like this I really hope that teams with playoff droughts like SAC really push for a playoff spot.

I’ve enjoyed the play-in system. This year is going to be the first year it’s original intent is tested. I wonder if play-in teams tank the game just to get those small lotto odds.

These tweets and other media stuff about Wemby coming to the Blazers are idiotic. Even if the Blazers had the worst record and got the most ping pong balls, there is no guaranty. Time to move on and at least try to enjoy the season. We fans, unfortunately, are more likely to experience a a bad health, or auto incident, than the Blazers getting the rights to draft Wemby happen. So live in the moment, because tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

While I definitely believe in living in the moment as thats the only way to do it, you can (and should!) also look to the future. The chances that Portland misses the playoffs this year are quite high even in the unlikely scenario that they stay healthy. If they suffer a key injury or two, it's a lock. If they land in the top half of the lotto the odds are significantly better then the possibilities you lay out. For instance, last year with the #6 slot Portland had a 9% chance of getting the top pick. Hell, it's anecdotal but I've been in one auto accident in my life & never had a major health scare but in that same span they've had the #1 pick 4 times.

Above all, we're just talking and our conversations have zero to do with what will actually transpire. So live in the moment and enjoy the banter

Can you imagine if there was no lottery this year? If the team with the worst record got the #1 pick? All 30 teams would try to lose. It would be hilarious. That’s how good this guy is.

Not all teams. Some teams don't own their 1st round pick. Like the Lakers.

I’m saying simply if the team with the worst record GOT the #1 pick, everyone would tank.

The Warriors, Celtics, Buck, and some other teams that can contend wouldn't.
