I'd say the deal is already in place to re-sign Jerami....he sounds like he's here and wants to be...Dame wants him...they traded Hart in order to pay him...he knows he'll get an extra year here if he wants it like Norm did and that security is worth a lot in today's revolving door NBA. Last of my worries is Grant leaving....he doesn't want to go to another Detroit situation or take a pay cut to ring chase with another superstar team like the Lakers.
yeah...they're not in Detroit...notice how many NBA players choose to retire in Detroit..probably zero. It's a slum surrounded by the Rust Belt ...yuck. NBA players buy houses in Portland ..Nance, Powell, CJ, Dame, on and on...much nicer place to raise a family than Detroit
Like pretty much everyone, I hope we don't break the bank on Grant. He's a third option at best. So is Ant. I like Ant but he might be more valuable to us as a trade piece. As for Grant, if we are going to pay more than his value, make it a sign and trade (if his rights are eligible, which IDK).

Yes - S&T would not impact Portland. The team receiving Grant would have to be below the hard-cap line (~$6M above the tax line). Since Portland has full-Bird rights, Portland can go into the tax to re-sign him. Yes - Portland could frontload the contract. The stipulation is that because an exception is being used, there is only an 8% variation allowed. IE - if Grant's year 1 salary was $30M, year 2 could not be less than $27.6M (or 8% reduction).
To me it's living in a less than appealing city than Portland ..granted I haven't been there in a long time but man that's one of the last NBA cities I would want to live in . In Detroit he was the number one option ..in Portland he doesn't have that pressure and can be a second or third option
Problem is a team would only need us to assist in a sign and trade if they didn't have cap room, but they can't be in the luxury tax for the entire 2023-24 season to receive a player in a sign and trade either. As you say they need to give the Blazers compensation we are interested in too. So it becomes a very small list of maybe only a couple teams that can do all of those things, so probably more likely that Grant just resigns, or if not that he walks.
Again - I'm not seeing much of a difference in situation. Both Portland & Detroit are in the bottom 1/3 of NBA cities for most players.
They can be a little into the luxury tax, they're just hard capped which is like 9M above the lux tax... if I remember correctly.
just a minor quibble: the team receiving a S&T would be hard-capped at the apron, not the luxury tax threshold
No matter what condition a city is in, the condition of the team plan is most important. These guys live in the nicest areas of any city they choose. LA has plenty of awful areas and problems. There are areas in Miami that aren't Paradise. But if said player likes the plan going forward, and his chemistry with fellow players, that is what will make him sign on the dotted line. I don't want the team to outbid themselves. Not saying they lowball either. But be smarter.
It was his neighbor...that city ..you can live in a million dollar condo in Calcutta but you still live in Calcutta...in the words of Henry Miller...you can look at the trash in the ditch or the flowers on the hill....choices. I sure would put Detroit on the bottom of NBA cities I'd live in or raise a family in.
