Re: Vilma's 2007 NFL Mock Draft

1. Oakland - JaMarcus Russell, QB, L.S.U.It's iffy if Randy Moss or Joey Porter will be back next year. But either way, this team needs someone to throw them the ball. Russell has no real downside. He's got an arm that can make all the throws, with nice touch, great pocket presence, and plenty of big game experience. He's also healthy and big enough to take a hit (which he'll need in Oakland).2. Detroit - Brady Quinn, QB, Notre DameLions' Head Coach Marinelli has already said that Jon Kitna is his starting QB in the 2007 season, but that doesn't mean it's not time to bring in the future at the position. Brady Quinn comes from excellent tutelage in Charlie Weis and has all the physical tools to succeed. The trick to success for will come down to how well he performs in big games.3. Tampa Bay - Alan Branch, DT, MichiganTampa Bay used to be the epitome of a defensive powerhouse, but age and free agent losses have caught up with them. And lets face facts, the Bucs have largely missed Warren Sapp since he departed for Oakland in 2004. In comes Alan Branch. Athletic, powerful, and a playmaking presence; Branch would fit nicely along side Chris Hovan in that interior.4. Cleveland - Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech.Cleveland has been trying to put something together in Cleveland, and while they would love to get their hands on a legit QB like Russell, they won't trade up for him. Frye is only an adequate starter, so it's best to surround him with all the weapons you can. With Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow already there, adding in Johnson will give Defensive Coordinators headaches.5. Houston (via Ari) - Joe Thomas, OT, WisconsinHouston is in desperate need for Offensive Line help. While Chester Pitts and Eric Winston look promising, the rest of the line is FUBAR. Joe Thomas is the only legitimate sure-fire Left Tackle in this draft. While not rated as highly as D'Brickashaw Ferguson last year, he's a good enough for Houston to sacrifice some picks and trade up for.6. Washington - Leon Hall, CB, MichiganThere are a lot of good Corners in this year's draft, but there is only 1 great one. And that's Leon Hall. Washington only has 1 draft pick on the 1st day of the draft, so they have to make an impact with it. They need some major DB help next to Carlos Rogers who is looking like a very good number 2 NFL corner or average number 1. Leon Hall is their guy.7. Minnesota - Gaines Adams, DE, ClemsonMinnesota having the 7th overall pick with all of the talent they have has to be some sort of mistake... but since they ended up with it anyway, they'll go ahead and take the defensive end that they've yet been able to lock down (despite their best efforts). Adams is the best true-defensive end in this class and he's a heck of an upgrade over Udeze and James.8. Arizona (via Hou) - Patrick Willis, MLB, Ole MissArizona doesn't yet have a Head Coach, so it's hard to tell what they are going to want to go for in the draft. However they do desperately need a mainstay at their Middle Linebacker position. This might be a bit early to take Willis, but after trading down to this pick, there isn't much else they can do without risking losing the opportunity to get him.9. Miami - LaRon Landry, S, L.S.U.This one is pretty cut and dry. The Dolphins are looking to fill in their defense as it ages, and while they already have Jason Allen to fill in one of the Safety spots. Landry can fill either the SS or the FS position, so whatever Allen does best, Landry can do the other and then Miami will have a Safety duo that GM's dream about.10. Atlanta - Amobi Okoye, DT, LouisvilleAtlanta has been at it's best when it can stop the run effectively. The Falcon's two top Defensive Tackles are Rod Coleman (31) and Grady Jackson (34). While both were good in their time, it's time to infuse some fresh blood. Okoye is as fresh as they get at 20 years old. He's a wide-bodied dominating force who will tie down the middle for the next decade.11. Green Bay (via SF) - Adrian Peterson, RB, OklahomaGreen Bay is losing Ahman Green to Free Agency, and even if they don't they'll need to find his replacement sooner rather than later. Noticing that Peterson is still on the board, trading up for him isn't a bad idea considering he wouldn't last to their pick at 16 overall. Peterson is oft-injured but extremely talented and would work well in the Green Bay offense.12. Buffalo - Paul Posluzney, OLB, Penn St.Buffalo has two good LB's, both of which are getting up there in years. Posluzney would have been a top 10 pick had he come out last year. He's a top of the line prospect coming out of the Linebacker pipeline that is Penn St. This team is defensively minded, so to have slow and aging linebackers is just unacceptable. Taking Posluzney will give them something to work with,13. St. Louis - Jamaal Anderson, DE, ArkansasThe Rams are in big need of some added defense and Anderson sitting here for them is a Godsend. With Leonard Little on one side (13.0 sacks last year) on one side and Anderson on the other (not to mention La'Roi Glover in the middle). Jamaal Anderson is just the young athletic infusion team needs to complete their defensive front to anchor the team. 14. Carolina - Lawrence Timmons, OLB, F.S.U.Carolina lose Will Witherspoon and the defense hasn't been the same since. Thomas Davis is promising but still raw and Na'il Diggs is nothing but average. Insert Timmons into the defense and you'll return the fire that this team has been so lacking. A warning though, their Defensive Tackle position might be in flux due to salary cap cuts this offseason and priorities could change quickly.15. Pittsburgh - Quentin Moses, DE/OLB, GeorgiaPittsburgh lost their long-time head coach in Bill Cowher and at this point it's unknown whether the Steelers will hire in-house or go with a completely new setup. Whether they stick with the 3-4 setup or switch to the 4-3 setup they'll need to add in some new talent on the outside. Moses is a rare athlete who can do just about anything you ask of him. And that kind of versatility is important for a team in flux.16. San Francisco (via GB) - Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Southern Cal.San Francisco moved down and still got the guy they probably would have grabbed at number 11 anyhow. The 49ers have their QB, their RB, and their TE. It's time they grab their WR and call it a day. Jarrett was called a guy in the Mike Williams mold before Williams went south. Basically he's big, he's got great hands, and he fights for the ball, but he only has moderate speed.17. Jacksonville - Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno St.Jacksonville has the most underrated number 1 corner in the NFL in Rashean Mathis. The big problem is that they have no one legit next to him in the lineup. McCauley is a fine physical specimin who might be a little raw but has tremendous upside. If all things pan out as they should, McCauley will turn into a legit number 1 corner and the Jags will have their top of the line duo.18. Cincinnati - Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio St.The Bengals are just inches away from winning their division again. And it all comes down to the middle. The Bengals are fine with John Thorton at one of their DT spots, but Sam Adams is way up there in age and has become nothing more than a road block for teams to just run around (no disruption, just immobile). Adding a guy like Pitcock will allow the Bengals' interior D line to be quit dynamic.19. Tennessee - Darrelle Revis, CB, PittsburghLike a lot of teams, the Titans have a strong number 1 CB with little to speak of at the number 2 spot. Pac Man Jones will be a long-time starter for the Titans provided he keeps himself out of trouble, Reynaldo Hill is a hard worker, but limited and more suited for a Nickel or Dime role. Darrelle Revis is a hard working stud who will be starting by mid-season for the Titans.20. New York Giants - Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal.The Giants are losing the heart and soul of not just their offense, but their entire team. Tiki Barber is choosing to move onto a career in broadcasting, so they'll need to replace him, and no Brandon Jacobs isn't the answer. Marshawn Lynch is the kind of guy who can be your workhorse from day 1. While Brandon Jacobs will always be a great goal line back, Lynch will do all the things Barber did on the field.21. Denver - Adam Carriker, DE, NebraskaCourtney Brown, Ebenezer Ekuban, John Engelberger, Kenard Lang, and Elvis Dumervil. Can anyone honestly say that they want a single one of those players to be their starting DE? Much less two of them at the same time? I thought not. Carriker will up the level of play at the position, and by proxy the entire team. The "Browncos" experiment failed, and it's simply time to move on.22. Dallas - Reggie Nelson, S, FloridaWith Bill Parcells as the Head Coach, the Dallas Defense has been playing way above their talent level. However, at the Safety position all they have is Roy Williams, who looks like a bad tupe trying to cover a bald man's head out there. Roy's saving grace is that he's a big hitter and defensive stopper. So adding a guy like Reggie Nelson in is perfect because he can cover the entire centerfield and leave Roy to roam.23. Kansas City - Levi Brown, OT, Penn St.Kansas City was hit hard with the loss of not 1, but 2 starting offensive tackles this past season. They relied for way too long on the aging veterans who had been there forever and once they finally left they were caught with their pants down. Levi Brown will at the very least be a starting quality tackle at the RT position and he has some promising prospects to play Left Tackle as well.24. New England (via Sea) - Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Ohio StateNew England traded up to select Chad Jackson in the 2nd round of last year's draft. But if you recall, they lost not 1, but both of their legitimate WR's. And it's obvious that allowing both to leave was a big-headed mistake by the front office. Replacing Branch and Givens isn't easy, but starting with Jackson and adding in the dynamic Ted Ginn Jr. just might do the trick.25. New York Jets - Chris Houston, CB, ArkansasThe Jets were ranked 6th in the NFL in Defense, thanks in large part to the brilliance of their new head coach Eric Mangini. But the sad fact of the matter is that the Jets lack anything above a quality number 2 at the Cornerback position. Chris Houston is a speedy CB with adequate height. His tackling skills will need work, but he's got everything else.26. New Orleans - Glenn Dorsey, DT, L.S.U.The Saints have done a spectacular job in the weak NFC this year. Adding in a Pro Bowl QB, getting back a Pro Bowl RB, drafting well in getting Marques Colston and Reggie Bush, not to mention adding in the NFL Coach of the Year Sean Payton. One thing that they didn't address is their lack of players in the middle of the D-line. If you don't recognize the names Brian Young or Antwan Lake, it's ok, neither do I.27. Philadelphia - Michael Griffin, S, TexasThe Eagles have the most underrated coach in the NFL in Andy Reid. To do what he has done in Philly is amazing. But his defensive backfield is in a bit of trouble, especially at the safety position. Brian Dawkins is good, but he's not getting any younger. Michael Lewis regressed this past year, and the Eagles ended up starting Jets' reject Sean Considine. Griffin will solve half their safety troubles.28. New England - Daymeion Hughes, CB, Cal.Unless the Patriots learn their lesson from the Branch trade, they are likely going to lose Asante Samuel to Free Agency because they aren't going to be willing to pay him. Hughes is a great physical product and a level-headed man who has the character to not get into trouble off the field. Adding in a true playmaking into the defensive backfield is imperative for the Patriots' success.29. Indianapolis - Buster Davis, ILB, F.S.U.The Indianapolis Colts have been terrible against the run, but they should be fine along their defensive line if they can add in just a little bit of toughness into their Linebacking corps. If you watch their games, the defensive line are doing a fine job, the opposing RB's are just running by their LB's. Buster Davis is a tough-nose run stopper who has come down the Florida State LB pipeline. 30. Baltimore - Victor Abiamiri, DE/OLB, Notre DameAdalius Thomas might leave via free agency, but even if he doesn't they still need depth behind both their DE unit and their OLB unit. Abramiri can fill either need as he is a 4-3 DE but where his true value comes in is that he actually has good cover skills and can make the switch to a run-enforcing OLB. The Ravens can have Abiamiri fill their OLB need, and have him for an emergency DE fill in.31. Chicago - Jeff Samardzija, WR, Notre DameChicago, for some unknown reason, have decided that Rex Grossman is their man at the QB position. So he will need as much help as he can get at the WR position. They signed Muhsin Muhammad from Carolina a couple years ago, and he never really panned out as the possession WR that they needed. Samardzija is a top 10 pick who falls in their laps due to his desire to play Baseball as well as Football.32. San Diego - Brandon Meriweather, S, MiamiThe Chargers sure would like a number 1 WR to fall to them, but as that isn't going to happen they'll fill their need of a quality safety to go with their solid duo of CB's in Jammer and Cromartie. Brandon Meriweather would have been the first safety off the board if he hadn't been labeled a trouble-maker after getting into a fight on the football field. He will do much better in the low pressure environment of San Diego.2nd Round33. Oakland - Justin Blalock, OL, Texas34. Detroit - Ray McDonald, DE, Florida35. Cleveland - Eric Weddle, S, Utah36. Tampa Bay - Sidney Rice, WR, U.S.C.37. New York Jets (via Was) - LaMarr Woodley, OLB, Michigan38. Arizona - Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan39. Houston - Tom Zbikowski, S, Notre Dame40. Miami - Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville41. Minnesota - Dwayne Bowe, WR, L.S.U.42. San Francisco - Ryan Kalil, OC, Southern Cal.43. Buffalo - Josh Beekman, OG, Boston College44. Atlanta - Eric Wright, CB, U.N.L.V.45. Carolina - Zach Miller, TE, Arizona St.46. Pittsburgh - Michael Bush, RB, Louisville47. San Francisco (via GB) - Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee48. Jacksonville - Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers49. Cincinnati - Jon Beason, OLB, Miami50. Tennessee - Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn51. St. Louis - Earl Everett, OLB, Florida52. New York Giants - Aaron Ross, CB, Texas53. Dallas - Arron Sears, OL, Tennessee54. Kansas City - Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee55. Denver - Fred Bennett, CB, U.S.C.56. Seattle - Ben Grubbs, OG, Auburn57. New Orleans - Greg Olsen, TE, Miami58. Philadelphia - Craig Davis, WR, L.S.U.59. New York Jets - Tony Ugoh, OT, Arkansas60. Tampa Bay (via Ind) - Ryan Harris, OT, Notre Dame61. New England - Dan Bazuin, OLB, Central Michigan62. Baltimore - Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio St.63. Chicago - Joe Newton, TE, Oregon St.64. San Diego - Paul Williams, WR, Fresno St.3rd Round65. Oakland - Doug Free, OT, Northern Illinois66. Detroit - Tim Duckworth, OG, Auburn67. Tampa Bay - Troy Smith, QB, Ohio St.68. Cleveland - Darius Walker, RB, Notre Dame69. Arizona - Josh Wilson, CB, Maryland70. Denver (via Was) - Johnnie Lee Higgins, WR, U.T.E.P.71. Miami - Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue72. Minnesota - Tanard Jackson, CB, Syracuse73. Arizona (via Hou) - Michael Johnson, S, Arizona74. Buffalo - Tarrell Brown, CB, Texas75. Atlanta - Mason Crosby, K, Colorado76. New York Jets (via GB through SF) - Tony Hunt, RB, Penn St.77. Pittsburgh - David Harris, ILB, Michigan78. Green Bay - Rufus Alexander, LB, Oklahoma79. Jacksonville - Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia80. Cincinnati - FORFIETED PICK (Ahmad Brooks) 81. Tennessee - Ryan McBean, DT, Oklahoma St.82. St. Louis - Kareem Brown, DT, Miami83. Carolina - Chris Leak, QB, Florida84. New York Giants - Jason Hill, WR, Washington St.85. Kansas City - Jordan Palmer, QB, U.T.E.P.86. Denver - Tony Taylor, OLB, Georgia87. Dallas - Paul Soliai, DT, Utah88. Seattle - Roderick Rogers, S, Wisconsin89. Philadelphia - KaMichael Hall, OLB, Georgia Tech.90. Green Bay (via NY) - Jonathan Wade, CB, Tennessee91. New Orleans - Tim Crowder, DE, Texas92. New England - Desmond Bishop, ILB, Cal.93. Indianapolis - Sabby Piscitelli, S, Oregon St.94. Baltimore - James Marten, OT, Boston College95. Chicago - Stanley Doughty, NT, U.S.C.96. San Diego - Manuel Ramirez, OG, Texas Tech.Projected Trade 1: Houston trade their number 8 overall, 73rd overall, and 104th overall to Arizona for the 5th overall pick.Projected Trade 2: Green Bay trade their 16th overall, and 47th overall picks to San Francisco for their 11th overall and 76th overall picks.Projected Trade 3: New York Jets trade their 90th overall pick and a 2008 3rd rounder to Green Bay for the 76th overall pick.Team by Team AnalysisArizona:8. Patrick Willis, MLB, Ole Miss38. Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan69. Josh Wilson, CB, Maryland73. Michael Johnson, S, ArizonaArizona trading Joe Thomas and moving down a few spots might turn out to be a mistake, but they picked up the top MLB that they needed, still got their quality OT, plus ended up taking a Safety that they needed with their first bonus pick. They also picked up Josh Wilson who could turn out to be a pretty good corner if he can overcome his physical limitations.Atlanta:10. Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville44. Eric Wright, CB, U.N.L.V.75. Mason Crosby, K, ColoradoAtlanta getting Amobi Okoye is a sweet move on their part. He's only 20 years old and he's still worthy of being a 1st round draft pick. They also added Eric Wright, a solid corner who can pair with DeAngelo Hall, and create a quality corner duo. For those of you saying "They already have Jimmy Williams" he will be moved to his more natural position of Free Safety. The Jets selected Mike Nugent a couple years ago when they did because the Falcons would have grabbed him a few picks later. They get their consolation prize in Mason Crosby in the 3rd round.Baltimore:30: Victor Abiamiri, DE/OLB, Notre Dame62: Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio St.94: James Marten, OT, Boston CollegeThe Ravens added the run-stopping OLB they desired who can also fill in in an emergency situation should a DE go down, and that versatility is key for a team that is always getting creative. Adding Anthony Gonzalez late in the 2nd round is a great move because the team lacks a true deep-threat at WR. James Marten might end up being a full time starter in Baltimore, but at the very least he'll be able to give the vets some rest.Buffalo:12. Paul Posluzney, OLB, Penn St.43. Josh Beekman, OG, Boston College74. Tarrell Brown, CB, TexasThe Bills had too many needs to fill them all in the draft, but they did what they could. They filled their OLB hole with Posluzney, a guy who can make things happen; their hole at OG with Josh Beekman, a workhorse who will help McGahee out; and their hole at Corner (which will be even bigger if Clements leaves) with Tarrell Brown, a guy who will end up being a steal.Carolina:14. Lawrence Timmons, OLB, F.S.U.45. Zach Miller, TE, Arizona St.83. Chris Leak, QB, FloridaCarolina got the outside Linebacker they needed in the hard-hitting Lawrence Timmons in the first round. Zach Miller will increase their offensive production by allowing the WR's to run free more often. And with Chris Leak they have a possible QB for the future to train behind Jake Delhomme. Chicago:31. Jeff Samardzija, WR, Notre Dame63. Joe Newton, TE, Oregon St.95. Stanley Doughty, NT, U.S.C.Chicago has the defense they want and the ability to retain it. So what's the obvious move? Improve the offense. Adding not just Jeff Samardzija but also the big Joe Newton will make their red-zone TD percentage jump through the roof. Stanley Doughty is an underrated prospect who will step into the backup role behind Tommie Harris allowing the team to dump "Tank" and all of his gun troubles.Cincinnati:18. Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio St.49. Jon Beason, OLB, Miami80. FORFIETED PICK (Ahmad Brooks)Is it obvious which side of the ball the Bengals need the most help on? They used their 3rd round pick in the supplemental draft to pick up MLB Ahmad Brooks, and I have them grabbing OLB Jon Beason out of Miami to fill their need there, not to mention spending their first round pick on Quinn Pitcock a playmaking DT in the middle. They need the help on their defense, because with that offense they should be winning their division.Cleveland:4. Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech.35. Eric Weddle, S, Utah68. Darius Walker, RB, Notre DameIt's do or die year for Head Coach Romeo Crennel. So adding players who can make an immediate impact is a must. Calvin Johnson should be able to at least step into the number 2 WR role next to Braylon Edwards and while Walker might not be a top level prospect, he's certainly capable of competing for the starting job from day one. Walker is the classic everything good but nothing great guy (Curtis Martin, Corey Dillon type). And it's obvious from the attempts to trade for guys like Derrick Strait for their safety position that they need a guy like Eric Weddle (a cover safety who can hit).Dallas:22. Reggie Nelson, S, Florida53. Arron Sears, OL, Tennessee87. Paul Soliai, DT, UtahAdding in Reggie Nelson next to the immobile Roy Williams is an imperative. Nelson will be able to cover all the spots that Williams misses to help lock down center field. Arron Sears is the classic Tackle-Guard who will be able to start at either position and provide a quality performance where ever the team needs him. Jason Ferguson needs someone to spell him from time to time to keep him fresh late in games, and Paul Soliai, while unlikely ever a starter at NT, will provide a hard working presence and good motor; and he's the high-character kind of guy that Parcells covets.Denver:21. Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska55. Fred Bennett, CB, U.S.C70. Johnnie Lee Higgins, WR, U.T.E.P.86. Tony Taylor, OLB, GeorgiaAdam Carriker isn't the pass rusher most people identify a 4-3 DE with, he's the other kind, the less publicized kind. The kind that locks down the run, and forces the double-team. Fred Bennett will help replace the tragic loss of Darrent Williams. Though Foxworth will get the starting gig, they'll need a Nickel corner. Johnnie Lee Higgins will be able to step in behind Rod Smith and Javon Walker and learn his position until he can take over for Rod Smith when it's his time to head to the tall grass. Tony Taylor definitely isn't a need, as the Broncos have great starters at the OLB positions, but they have little depth and Taylor can fill in there and take on a special teams role.Detroit:2. Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame34. Ray McDonald, DE, Florida66. Tim Duckworth, OG, AuburnWith Kitna set to start the 2007 season, Brady Quinn will have a lot less pressure on him than most number 2 overall QB's. He'll be able to progress as he naturally would at the NFL level and take over for Kitna when he's ready to. Ray McDonald fits the Lions' desperate need of an upgrade at the defensive end position. McDonald is a close-down DE who will plug up his side of the line and be able to occasionally get to the QB. Tim Duckworth paved the way for Kenny Irons at Auburn, and he'll pave the way for Kevin Jones here in Detroit. He'll fit nicely between Backus and Raiola on the left side of the O-line.Green Bay:11. Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma78. Rufus Alexander, LB, Oklahoma90. Jonathan Wade, CB, TennesseeGreen Bay is losing it's long-time starter either immediately to free agency for over the next year or two to old age. Trading up for Adrian Peterson is a risky move considering Peterson's injury history, but in this case his rewards outweight his risks and at essentially giving up their 2nd round pick for a 3rd round pick in order to move up, it's a good deal for both sides. Rufus Alexander will look very nice across the field from AJ Hawk and with Nick Barnett in the middle the Packers will have a dynamic threesome in their LB corps. The Packers have a terrific 1-2 duo at the corner position, but they have little depth behind Woodson and Harris which is where Jonathan Wade comes in.Houston:5. Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin39. Tom Zbikowski, S, Notre DameSacrificing their 3rd overall pick in order to move up 3 spots and take the only legit Left Tackle in the draft is not too high a price to pay. Houston has had trouble with their O-line since the franchise was created, and they've never done anything but put free agent band aid after free agent band aid. Adding Thomas is a bold move, and while he's not quite the prospect that D'Brickashaw Ferguson was last year, he's still a great prospect in his own right. Tom Zbikowski is an upgrade over either of the Texans' Safeties, despite their youth.Indianapolis:29. Buster Davis, ILB, F.S.U.93. Sabby Piscitelli, S, Oregon St.The Colts traded their 2nd round pick to Tampa Bay in order to pick up Anthony McFarland and help their run defense. What most people don't realize is that McFarland is doing his job and taking on two blockers at once during most plays. What most people don't realize is that it's the Linebackers who aren't making the stops; running backs are running right by them (or dragging them along for 8 yard gains). Buster Davis is a run-enforcer and can help change that. Sabby Piscitelli is suffering from the same thing as Jeff Samardizija, he is more talented then his draft position will tell you, but as he is also considering playing baseball he drops down the draft board.Jacksonville:17. Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno St.48. Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers79. Charles Johnson, DE, GeorgiaAs previously stated, Jacksonville really needs someone quality to stand up there next to Mathis in the Lineup and play full tilt. McCauley can be their guy. In the mean time, Brian Williams will hold onto the spot for dear life and then take the Nickel spot when McCauley is ready to be a starter at some point during the 2007 season. Brian Leonard is a bit of an odd pick for them, considering they have Greg Jones in that role (returning from injury), but Greg Jones isn't much of a blocker, where Leonard is, and Leonard has more natural skills at catching the ball than Jones does. As Fred Taylor moves on, having Jones to be the goal line back and Leonard to be the Fullback will take enough pressure off of Maurice Jones Drew to make him a superstar. Charles Johnson comes into the rotation at DE adding youth and spelling the veterans.Kansas City:23. Levi Brown, OT, Penn St.54. Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee85. Jordan Palmer, QB, U.T.E.P.Kansas City lost their starting OT's and while they can handle the RT position with what they have, they need to add a guy like Levi Brown to command the defensive ends who are constantly trying to kill the QB. Their WR corps desperately needs an infusion of youth with Tony Gonzalez being 31 and Eddie Kennison being 34. Robert Meachem is big, powerful, fast, and a good kid. He just lacks big game experience against top level competition, so he's a quality pick for their need. The Chiefs also need a backup QB to groom for the future and Jordan Palmer is their man. Jordan isn't as talented as his older brother Carson, but he does have plenty of tools and a good head on his shoulders to work with.Miami:9. LaRon Landry, S, L.S.U.40. Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville71. Anthony Spencer, DE, PurdueMiami's defense is much in need of an overhaul and it's most glaring hole at the moment is the Safety position. Last year's first round pick Jason Allen will probably step in at the Free Safety position, so Landry will get to do what he does best and just plain be a playmaker. I have them taking Brohm in the 2nd round because they do need a QB for the future as Harrington obviously isn't it and Culpepper is injury prone and no one knows if he'll ever be his former self. Brohm suffers from the Aaron Rodgers effect where he falls lower than he should because teams just plain don't need a new franchise QB. So the Dolphins will take their luck where they can get it and keep Brohm to themselves. Anthony Spencer fills the depth need at Defensive End where Jason Taylor threatened to retire this year.Minnesota:7: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson41: Dwayne Bowe, WR, L.S.U.72: Tanard Jackson, CB, SyracuseThe Vikings have tried and tried and tried to fill their DE positions with quality players. Yet they've continued to fail miserably. Gaines Adams is the best pure-defensive end in this year's draft and at perfect value for the number 7 pick. Gaines can hold the fort down at one end while the Vikings hold an open competition fo see if Darrion Scott, Kenechi Udeze, or Erasmus James can win the job outright. The Vikings inexplicably cut their number 1 WR on Christmas, leaving themselves with little depth to work with. Adding Bowe will give them a big target to go with their former 1st round draft pick Troy Williamson. Tanard Jackson is a bit of a sleeper. He has the physical skills but is a bit raw and has a bit of a violent history.New England:24. Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Ohio State28. Daymeion Hughes, CB, Cal.61. Dan Bazuin, OLB, Central Michigan92. Desmond Bishop, ILB, Cal.The Patriots started revamping their WR corps by adding Chad Jackson in last year's NFL draft, and it's time to finish the job by adding tactician Ted Ginn Jr. this year. Daymeion Hughes is a big, physical cover corner who should help sting the loss of their number 1 CB Asante Samuel. The Patriots' front office isn't stupid, it notices that their LB corps is getting older and slower. And although Tully Banta-Cain has shown to be a promising OLB, they need to fill in the gaps with more youthful talent. Dan Bazuin is the kind of of guy who will work hard every day to get the job done, and has great character (IE he fits the mold of what the Patriots usually want). Desmond Bishop is the perfect fit as a Inside Linebacker in the 3-4 because he is excellent at tacking on blockers and shedding them as quickly as possible. He'll get behind those offensive guards to make it a 2 yard gain instead of a 6 yard gain.New Orleans:26: Glenn Dorsey, DT, L.S.U.57: Greg Olsen, TE, Miami91: Tim Crowder, DE, TexasThe Saints are a very well-rounded team talent wise. They have Pro Bowlers at QB, RB, WR.... oh... they're all on the offensive side of the ball. They do have good players on defense such as DE Will Smith and CB Mike McKenzie, but they need to add talent there. Glenn Dorsey will give them a 1-gap penetrating presence that will pressure opposing QB's and move runs outside. And DE Tim Crowder could turn into a starter on the other end opposite Will Smith. Greg Olsen isn't a "need" pick so much as he completes their dynamic offense. They have the Pro Bowl QB (Drew Brees), WR (Joe Horn), and RB (Deuce McAllister); as well as the youth at WR in Colston and RB in Reggie Bush. So what they need is that big Red Zone target Tight End and Greg Olsen provides them exactly that.New York Giants:20. Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal.52. Aaron Ross, CB, Texas84. Jason Hill, WR, Washington St.Losing Tiki Barber will sting, but adding Marshawn Lynch back into his place will take just a little bit of sting out of it. Marshawn Lynch is an all-around back who can step right in and pick up where Tiki left off. Brandon Jacobs might be a bit upset, but he's nothing more than a very good goal line back. Aaron Ross had an absolutely terrific senior season, but it was his only good season so it'll be hard for teams to trust him not to be a one year wonder. The Giants need to add WR depth behind Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer and Jason Hill is an extremely talented WR who slips to the third round because he underachieved a bit in college. Lets see if he can turn it around on the Giants.New York Jets:25. Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas37. LaMarr Woodley, OLB, Michigan59. Tony Ugoh, OT, Arkansas76. Tony Hunt, RB, Penn St.The Jets had a top ranked defense this past year, but none-the-less both of their two highest picks are defensive players. The Jets did give up a lot of yards per game this past season, and the Corners not being able to lock down WR's late in games is a big reason why. Houston might not have the best physical measurables in this year's draft class (5-11, 190 pounds), but he will be able to step in immediately and up the level of play in New York. He is fast (4.4 speed) and he is used to playing against top-level competition (SEC vet), so the pick makes sense. The Jets snag LaMarr Woodley because it gives them a possible top-of-the-line duo of 3-4 OLB's with Bryan Thomas. Tony Ugoh takes some heat because he likely will never be a Left Tackle in the NFL, but that's ok for the Jets because they won't be in need of one for a decade. Locking him in at RT will do worlds of wonder. The Jets then trade up for Tony Hunt because they bet they would get at least one 2nd round RB and missed on all 3. Hunt will duo with Leon Washington nicely.Oakland:1. JaMarcus Russell, QB, L.S.U.33. Justin Blalock, OL, Texas65. Doug Free, OT, Northern IllinoisThere are so many needs in Oakland, I'm not sure that they shouldn't trade their 1st overall pick down for 10 2nd round picks. But aside from the unrealistic possibilities, they'll stay put and draft the best QB prospect in the past few years. And if they are going to dedicate themselves to drafting a QB for the future, they sure as heck should protect him. So picking up Justin Blalock in the 2nd round is a great move because it gives him either a legitimate and immediate starter at Offensive Guard or a legitimate future starter at Offensive Tackle. It'll be up to the Raiders to decide what to do with him, but as long as they don't keep changing his position on him like they've done to Robert Gallery he will be a success. Doug Free as their 3rd round pick makes sense because they don't just need 1 offensive lineman, they need 3. Philadelphia:27. Michael Griffin, S, Texas58. Craig Davis, WR, L.S.U.89. KaMichael Hall, OLB, Georgia Tech. The Eagles are using a New York Jets reject as their starting Strong Safety. This pretty much proves the need for drafting Michael Griffin, a tough guy who can lay out any WR who dares to attempt to make a catch between the hash marks. The Eagles may lose Donte Stallworth and Reggie Brown is a number 2 WR at best. Craig Davis has all the tools to develop into a legit number 1 WR in the NFL. A classic down-the-sideline deep threat who has excellent speed, height, and strength to make the catch in traffic. KaMichael hall makes sense because no one other than Omar Gaither is happy with Omar Gaither being their starting OLB in Philly.Pittsburgh:15. Quentin Moses, DE/OLB, Georgia46. Michael Bush, RB, Louisville77. David Harris, ILB, MichiganThe Steelers are going to soon be under new management, but regardless they need youth and athleticism in their front 7. Quentin Moses can fill either a 3-4 LB role or a 4-3 DE role admirably, and probably a 3-4 DE roll adequately. The Steelers have always been successful when they have someone to pound the football. Michael Bush is as talented as any Running back coming out this year, but sadly broke his leg in the first game of the season. Swirling reports of him still having a limp have dropped him out of the first round. The Steelers are the lucky benefactors in this situation, even if they have to wait on Bush like Buffalo had to wait on McGahee, in the long run he'll be well worth the trouble as he's pounding the ball up the middle for huge gashes of yardage. Along the same thinking as their first round pick, the Steelers need to add talent to the defense. Only this time they're adding it to the inside with David Harris, a playmaking ILB coming out of Michigan's top defense.San Diego:32. Brandon Meriweather, S, Miami64. Paul Williams, WR, Fresno St.86. Manuel Ramirez, OG, Texas Tech. The Chargers' real need is a ready-to-start number 1 caliber WR. But stuck at the end of each round, that is highly unlikely to happen. So they'll move onto their next big need, Safety. The Chargers have some good role players at Safety but no one who truly makes a difference and Meriweather will make a difference. Brandon Meriweather would be a probable top 10 pick had he not thrown a little tantrum in an on-the-field brawl and struck another player with his helmet; however the lifestyle change of going from Miami to San Diego. Paul Williams is a good sleeper, if he had gone to a big named school he would have gone a round higher. At 6'2" 215 pounds and a sub 4.4 40 yard dash, Williams is a legit sleeper to be a future number 1. The Chargers added a pretty dag good OT in Marcus McNeill in last year's draft, and the Chargers should continue building the line by adding a quality Guard. And Manuel Ramirez is of value and the best left on the board.San Francisco:16. Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Southern Cal.42. Ryan Kalil, OC, Southern Cal.47. Justin Harrell, DT, TennesseeThe 49ers are trying to put together a legitimate offense to contend in the disturbingly tough NFC West division. Dwayne Jarrett should give them a legitimate pass catching threat for Alex Smith to pass to other than Vernon Davis (which should free them both up for more opportunities. Ryan Kalil is a better prospect than Chris Spencer (Seattle) was a couple years ago, and as luck would have it the 49ers need a Center and Kalil fell into their laps. The 49ers have another 2nd round pick as part of their projected trade back in the 1st round. I see them spending it on Justin Harrell. Harrell projects terrifically as a 4-3 DT and he is one heck of an upgrade over both Isaac Sopoaga and Marques Douglas.Seattle:56. Ben Grubbs, OG, Auburn88. Roderick Rogers, S, WisconsinSeattle lost the best Offensive Guard in the game and had to resort to replacing him with Porkchop Womack. The Seahawks need a viable alternative to Womack and they need it yesterday. Ben Grubbs isn't Steve Hutchinson, but he's an upgrade over Womack and that's the most pressing concern. With Michael Boulware looking like he's not as good as his reputation, it's not a bad idea to bring in someone to at least compete with him for the job. Roderick Rogers was such a terror for the Badgers in 2005, teams tried their best to avoid him in 2006. And having a safety that teams try and avoid isn't a bad thing to have.St. Louis:13. Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas51. Earl Everett, OLB, Florida82. Kareem Brown, DT, MiamiJamaal Anderson falling to the Rams at the 13th pick will be seen by some as a miracle. Leonard Little is getting older, but he could also use some help on the other side. Adding in a guy like Jamaal Anderson will put a lot more pressure on the QB and by proxy help out the entire defense. But that doesn't mean he can make all the changes on his own. They also could use a legitimate Outside Linebacker back there and Earl Everett is their man. Everett was a bulwark for the Florida Gators on the outside, stuffing runs and jamming tight ends. But the Rams aren't finished on Defense. Last year the Rams added in their future replacement for La'Roi Glover in Claude Wroten, and it's time to seal the deal by adding in a guy to rotate with the very talented but very inconsistent Jimmy Kennedy. Kareem Brown will make a great rotation with Kennedy keeping them both fresh and therefore both clogs in the middle.Tampa Bay:3. Alan Branch, DT, Michigan36. Sidney Rice, WR, U.S.C60. Ryan Harris, OT, Notre Dame67. Troy Smith, QB, Ohio St.The Bucs not only have been missing Warren Sapp for the past few years, they traded away Anthony McFarland. While they still have Chris Hovan and Ellis Wyms isn't terrible, they need Alan Branch to completely up their overall level of play. They may have finally found the replacement for Sapp that they were looking for. Tampa Bay also needs a WR for Chris Simms to throw to other than Joey Galloway all day long, and Sidney Rice is quite the playmaker. When he went against Georgia Tech, he looked like the better WR over Calvin Johnson. And that's saying something. Jeremy Trueblood is solid, but they need to tie down the other OT spot and Ryan Harris is their man. Harris blocked for Brady Quinn at Notre Dame and if he can keep that guy upright, then it's looking good for Simms.Tennessee:19. Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh50. Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn81. Ryan McBean, DT, Oklahoma StThe Titans desperately need someone next to Pac Man Jones out there at the Cornerback spot. Darrelle Revis has been avoided since his Freshman year in college, and once he gets over the learning curve of coming from a small school to the NFL. Chris Brown is gone this offseason, Travis Henry's contract is coming up and he's been streaky, and LenDale White has done nothing to warrant taking touches away from Henry. It's never ideal to draft a running back in the same round two years in a row, but Irons and White will either make for a great duo or Irons will make for a great feature back. Either way it's a no-lose situation. I've also got the Titans taking Ryan McBean to see if he can take the starting position next to the commanding Albert Haynesworth, but if nothing else he's going to get work in a rotation until the Titans figure something out.Washington:6. Leon Hall, CB, MichiganThe Redskins made the brilliant move of trading away their 2nd round pick for pennies on the dollar to the Jets, and then proceeded to give their 3rd round pick away to the Broncos in order to get T.J. Duckett who rarely sees the field. In any case, Washington has to make their 1 pick on the 1st day count. Picking up Leon Hall will hopefully give them a legit CB in the defensive backfield next to Carlos Rogers. A couple cover-corners with Sean Taylor ready to make some big hits should help their otherwise ailing defense.

Re: Vilma's 2007 NFL Mock Draft

Let me start out by saying you're absolutely crazy for doing a three rounder this early :DWith that said..
2. The trick to success for will come down to how well he performs in big games.
If Martz sticks around, I wouldn't be surprised to see them wait on a QB until later on so he can develop him over a year or two. Whether it's Brady or someone else, Detroit WILL be starting Kitna next season, so I think drafting a stud LT of the future in Joe Thomas would be ideal.
That's a pretty balsy pick with CJ and Thomas on the board..
Braylon Edwards and (they hope) Travis Wilson are the future at WR in Cleveland. There's no way they pass on both AP and Thomas here.
Gerald Hayes was an absolute stud on the inside for them this season.
The Falcons are currently 4-deep at DT with Coleman/Jackson/Babineaux/Shropshire, and Babineaux and Shropshire will only be entering their third seasons next year. Can't see them passing on Nelson at this point.
Posluzny*But he's not a top 15 pick..I can see a team picking him in the top 20 due to the name/school, but he's probably the most overrated player in this draft. Buffalo would probably go Revis or Timmons here I would think..
Baer will like this, but I'm still against it. They have a ton of young talent at the WR position, and while most of them are roleplayers, that's fine with studs Vernon Davis and Frank Gore already having huge roles in the offense. I'm almost 100% sure they go defense in the first with a need at basically every position but SS and OLB.
Brian Williams was signed to a huge contract last off-season..I don't think they're ready to label that as a mistake just yet..
Interesting over Tank Tyler and Glenn Dorsey..
Why over Ginn? Bennett will likely be departing and Givens may not be 100% at the start of the season (and let's face it, he's not the same player outside of New England).
Jacobs is the RB of the future. They'll add a RB this off-season, but it will be a third down guy and nothing more. Some people hype Jacobs like the next Jim Brown, which is wrong, but other seem to completely ignore his presence just because Barber is retiring. This kid can play.
Again, over Tank and Dorsey? And then Jarvis Moss at DE?
So what happens to Pat Watkins?
Obviously makes sense, but some team will pick him before this.
Interesting..I think they grab Asante Samuel this off-season, but to reach on Houston here would probably upset a lot of Jet fans.
The Colts will never pick a linebacker in the first round. I know how bad they need to this year, but they just don't value the position which is probably why Cato June is going to walk.
I don't think Abiramiri can be a 4-3 OLB, unless you think they'll switch to a full-time 3-4 next year..If they don't, then Dan Cody already fills this role in their defense.
It makes the most sense to go to Chicago because he'll more than likely be a Cub, but either way he won't go in the first round with the depth at WR this draft.
That's one hell of a drop..
Jarvis Moss? Charles Johnson?
They've got two youngsters in Brodney Pool and Sean Jones back there, with veteran Brian Russell (even though he's probably going to move on soon). They probably have much bigger needs than safety.
I can't see him going within the first 75 picks. It would probably be smarter for him to not come out this year.
Wow, I didn't think you even had him coming out. He's a first round pick if he does and wouldn't slip past Carolina/Jacksonville, if not then Baltimore/Chicago.
Again, they have way too many defensive needs. The offense was perfectly legit this year. This is also way too high for Kalil, he's no Mangold.[quote[43. Buffalo - Josh Beekman, OG, Boston College
Not only over Grubbs, but over a whole bunch of corner and WR talent?
Again, Atlanta has decent depth at CB. It's an arguable need, but you'd like to give Jimmy Williams a shot before you throw him onto the scrap heap. It seems as if you give up way too quickly on team's youngsters..
Carolina doesn't use TE's in their offensive system.
I think you're forgetting about Greg Jones.
It was horrible for them to lose Williams, but corner shouldn't be a need in the first two rounds.I'm not gonna get too deep into the third because it's way too early to tell, but Charles Johnson and Anthony Spencer are falling way too far IMO.Also, where are Tank Tyler, Jarvis Moss and HB Blades?
Agreed with Griffin..Gotta disagree with Davis since we've already got 5 WRs who can play in this system on the roster, and 3 great young ones if Stallworth departs. Reggie Brown actually IS a future #1 receiver, despite the fact that you don't hear about him much and he hasn't put up a huge season yet. And actually I think everyone in Eagles country is perfectly fine with Gaither at OLB, especially considering the defense has been 100x better since he was plugged in. We can definitely use an OLB, but only because Dhani Jones probably won't be back next season. Gaither's spot is safe. It's hard to comment on this because IMO trades are impossible to predict and can't really be commented on, and three rounds this early makes a lot of this unpredictable. Solid job though. I would just suggest that you make sure you have a clear knowledge of a team's future plans at certain positions, because a lot of these picks would require teams to basically say goodbye to important draft picks from LAST year.

He's never going to be a legit number 1.

And I'd like to remind all of you of a couple of things.Darryl Blackstock from the 2005 draft. Kiper was saying he should go in the last 10 picks in the 1st round, other experts were putting him at the late-1st or Early 2nd.... Nothing was wrong with Blackstock. He didn't break his leg or shoot anyone. He fell to the 31st pick in the 3rd round, 2 rounds lower than he was projected to go.Max Jean-Gilles Was projected to go in the 2nd round... and by some in the 1st round. Most people figured he'd be off the board in the mid-2nd round. Where was he drafted? He was the 2nd pick off the board at the start of the day.... the start of day 2. Picked up by the Eagles in the 4th round.Alan Zemaitis was going to be a great pickup in the early 2nd round last year. Not only did he drop to the 4th round, but 6 other Corners went from the early 2nd round to when he was drafted. And wasn't Winston Justice a sure-fire top 10 pick and "in a lot of ways better than D'Brick right now" last year? Oh, right, 2nd round pick.

I'd kill to get Brohm but we won't slip that far.OL is more also a need for the Dolphins, it wouldn't suprise me to see us get a C and a LT on day 1.

You have guys like Justin Harrell going before him, so it's not like he's simply dropping, there's something you don't like about him.

I bet you've never watched tank play. You probably looked at his stats and weight and thought he would be crap. This guy is like the Pat Williams of college. Nothing gets past him. Vikings mock isn't bad. I would take Bowe and Gaines.
Blackstock didn't fall 2 rounds because 1 player's stock grew to be better than his, and everyone knew was better than him when they made their projections.
No, but his so called first round grade kind of evaporated because of it. He's not as good as people projected him to be.
Jury's still out on both of those points since neither one of them plays yet.
I think that's just a simple disagreement between us..I think Blades is the third best ILB in the draft.
He's not THAT big, his size is probably ideal. He's slow, but that's not because he's plain fat and unathletic, he's actually the exact opposite of that. Not to mention he's still got a ton of upside, enough to guarantee him a place on the first day. I can understand this argument being about the first round, but to say that Tank Tyler isn't a first DAY pick is very bold.

I think you went a little overboard for 4 months before the Draft. [IMG]
QUOTE

5. While not rated as highly as D'Brickashaw Ferguson last year, he's a good enough for Houston to sacrifice some picks and trade up for.23. Kansas City - Levi Brown, OT, Penn St.Kansas City was hit hard with the loss of not 1, but 2 starting offensive tackles this past season. They relied for way too long on the aging veterans who had been there forever and once they finally left they were caught with their pants down. Levi Brown will at the very least be a starting quality tackle at the RT position and he has some promising prospects to play Left Tackle as well
When is the last time either Mike Shanahan or Gary Kubiak offenses have selected a offensive lineman in the First Round? It clearly isn't much of a priority to them and even if it was, it wouldn't be a big enough one to trade up for. And Herm has never selected an Offensive Lineman before the Third Round despite how many times we needed a Lineman, he'll either pick up some washed up veteran or pick a mid rounder and pray. I doubt he starts now.Your value on quite a few players is off though. Too high IMOPaul Poslusney (15-25)Quentin Moses (20-30)Chris Houston (Round 2)Jeff Samardzija (Round 2)Paul Williams (Round 3-4) Too Low IMOAdrian Peterson (3-10), Reggie Nelson (8-15), Justin Blalock (15-30), Brian Brohm (9-20), Robert Meachem (20-40)Anthony Spencer (20-40)Tim Crowder (Round 2)BTW, It was the Vikings who were going to grab Nugent a few picks later, but the Falcons need a kicker regardless so Crosby is a fine pick.I'm too lazy to read through the rest of it right now, so I'll finish up later.

Jeff Samardzija, i'd be glad to have him late in the 1st round. We need depth at WR.

Sure, 305-310 is ideal if it's all muscle. But I can't get the image out of my head of watching him pull himself from a game to suck down oxygen... twice... in the same 3rd quarter. That my friends, is a paperweight. Either lose the weight and become lean or keep the weight but replace it with muscle. Either way, just do better.

Re: Vilma's 2007 NFL Mock Draft

Alright, Im just going to make a couple comments, not sure if they have been said, I havent read every single comment yet.No way the Browns take Calvin Johnson with Edwards and Winslow.49ers. I'm 95% sure they have 8 picks in the first 3 rounds. You have them only have 3. We are not going to trade down, Ill tell you that much, because that trade wasn't even that good. Again, I'm starting to get a new opinion, if Reggie Nelson or Laron Landry or Patrick Willis are on the board at the 49ers pick at #11, I do now see them taking a defender. However, Dwayne Jarrett is still always a possibility, as I still think we need that WR. 42. Ryan Kalil, OC, Southern Cal.47. Justin Harrell, DT, TennesseeThe DT we need, but what is an OC? Offensive Coordinator? Either way, we don't need anymore offense, especially if we pick Jarrett in the 1st round. Our OL is good enough we could take someone on the second day. We need to improve our defense, like Gametime said.

OC is center. Unless that was a joke.

well, if it's center, we dont need one. maybe you didnt notice, but gore had the 3rd most yards in teh NFL this year, most in the NFC. im going to go ahead and guess our OL is good enough to pass on the first day
