QUOTE

Next in line: After locking up Jerry Stackhouse, the Mavericks can turn their attention to their other free agents, and potential future free agents, like Devin Harris.

Harris is eligible for an extension of up to five seasons, and his agent, Henry Thomas, said Friday that they are taking a patient approach.

"There's no timetable," Thomas said. "We're going to talk to them in a week or two, and at that time an evaluation will have to be made."

The options for Harris, whom the Mavericks have said will be their starting point guard next season, include signing an extension, if offered, or trying restricted free agency next summer. Thomas said deciding whether to wait until next season to angle for a new contract is dicey.

"Everybody in this position, if they are offered an extension, has to decide whether to take it as opposed to rolling the dice the following year," Thomas said.

So if Devin Harris is our starting PG next year and gets locked up for several more after that - what kind of role do you think JT will have with us next year --> 6th man of the Year Candidate? Some kind of Manu Ginobili role?

I hate to think about politics on the roster, but I'd be afraid that they don't want to sit money down. Other than that, I'm stillinfatuated with Stack at the 2 (playingless than major minutes) and Terry as the 6th man in a swing position. This is designed to let Ager develop as another backup behind him.

I don't see why people are so down on Terry after one year. He shouldn't be the best player in the backcourt, but he's still a nice fit at PG IMO. I still hold out hope that we can get a good to great big guard before the season starts to put next to Devin or Terry, whichever stays.

Avery Johnson said the other day that there was a spot open in the starting lineup for Ager or Stackhouse to fight for...where does this leave Jet? Can any of you guys see a conceivable trade..someone suggested an Ager/Terry/Buckner for Kirilenko - now that would be nice

Harris/Stack/Kirilenko/Nowitzki/Dampier - Andrei would be the perfect balance to Dirk, let him focus on his offensive game while AK manns the paint.
Could Cleveland be interested in JT? Or Orlando..

How does AK show up? If it's like we know he can, then let's do it, otherwise, I don't want any more (literal) crybabies.

I'd stay Jet as 6th man, Stackhouse 7th man, Diop and George fill the rest off the bench.

You guys think Jet would be ok as the 6th man? I would think that he would ask to be traded if he wasn't starting for the Mavs.

I'm kinda thinking Avery will still start him though even though I think Terry would be great off the bench.

I like Devin a lot but I still can't see him as starting, I see the Jet as a better choice, a vetaran. I agree that Avery will most probably start him over Devin. Maybe split minutes.

I think they should split minutes but Devin's defense is definitely needed. Terry could be more as a spark plug off the bench. Giving us more points. I see Harris as a defensive specialist and a streaky offensive player. To me he is needed to guard some of the best point guards in the league. Terry is not a terrible defender but that is not his forte. Still Terry should get 24-30 minutes a game no matter if he starts or not.

Championship teams can't afford to allot minutes to inferior players. Terry is clearly better than Harris right now and should continue to start and play more minutes since he has a greater positive impact than Harris. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Harris can also play shooting guard at times, so perhaps he can receive some of his minutes at that position as the the third guard; the first guard off the bench.

I don't even like Harris playing for us, he's still a liability. This is what would've happened to Detroit if they had played Darko...

The Eddie Jones signing, as I said in the thread about that, confirms IMO that JET's headed to the bench. That, and the fact that before our Summer League game against Portland, Avery explicity stated that we have an opening in the starting lineup. That's really for the best. Bench scoring was not a strength of this team last year (even though it was a huge strength the year before), withour second best bench scorer being Devean F-ing George. I love George and what he brings to this team, but when when the 2 of your 1-2 punch off the bench is Devean F-ing George...you have issues.

Harris is more of a point guard than Terry will ever be. That's how bad we are at point guard.

Thank you! Terry may be able to score more points (with heck of a lot more FGA) than Harris, but Harris is a POINT. Terry can fight over the #2 spot with whoever AJ decides to bring in, but our #1 spot belongs to #34.
