PARIS, 7 September - Argentina caused a huge upset in the opening match of the IRB Rugby World Cup by beating France 17-12 at the Stade de France on Friday, handing the host nation their first ever defeat in the pool stages.

Felipe Contepomi missed a penalty at the death, giving France an opportunity to launch one last attack, but it came to nothing and referee Tony Spreadbury blew for fulltime, sparking wild celebrations among the Argentine players.

Argentina had lost in their two previous appearances in the world cup opening match, but their resolute defence early in the second half against an improved French outfit proved decisive as they repelled drive after drive before Christophe Dominici was penalised for holding on and the Pumas were able to clear their lines.

David Skrela missed a straightforward penalty for France, but made amends just before the hour mark with another to reduce the deficit to 17-12 before limping off to be replaced by Frederic Michalak.

France continued to look threatening in attack, but the ball went loose and the Pumas hacked it up field, full back Ignacio Corleto chasing and recovering the ball, but Felipe Contepomi couldn't take his low pass for what would have been a potentially match-winning try.

The Pumas defence continued to hold firm, but it could have been a different story had Michalak not skewed his first penalty attempt with nine minutes to go, a miss that, together with Skrela's, ultimately proved costly for Les Bleus.

Corleto had earlier scored the only try of the Pool D opener to give the Pumas a 17-9 half-time lead. A try for France had seemed on the cards when Damien Traille broke through the Pumas defence and fed Remy Martin, but the flanker's pass found Argentine wing Horacio Agulla. He found Manuel Contepomi, who released Corleto to run to the corner.

Felipe Contepomi's conversion hit the post, but Argentina led 14-3 after 27 minutes with the fly half having also kicked three penalties. It could have been worse for France with the Pumas missing three drop goal attempts, two by Juan Martin Hernandez and one by Felipe Contepomi.

France fly half Skrela kicked three penalties for France, his third being the final act of the first 40 minutes and cutting the deficit to eight points after a fourth penalty by Felipe Contepomi had given Argentina a lead their performance deserved.

Wow I surely didn't expect this one. France and Argentina are in pool D that also includes Ireland, Georgia, and Nambia. Pool play continues tomorrow with New Zealand vs. Italy, Australia vs. Japan, and England vs. USA.

Sebastian Chabal. I was impressed by Argentina, they really wanted it and played exceptionally well on defense. Granted France could've done better. The RWC usually doesn't have too many upsets, so this was a nice way to shake up the tournament. Ireland vs. France is going to be a huge match now.

New Zealand 76 Italy 14 full time.

I've mentioned thisbefore back on JBBthat France's first mistake to hamper their chances of winning the RWC were excluding a few players that are far better then others their manager has selected. Skrela for one is not as good as Yachvili and now the dumbass is injured for two weeks. Yachvili is one of the best at his position in the world of Rugby Union and he's just sitting at home watching this and his younger brother (representing Georgia). It was supposed to be a clash of the brothers during the Georgia vs. France match later in their pool. Much of the French media were looking forward to it including myself.

France lost that first match because of several reasons though and believe me Argentina weren't as great as France were poor. The Argentines opened very aggressive and took it to the French straight away, which caught them by surprise. Instead of concentrating on what they were doing they seemed almost unaware of what was going on half the time. They dropped so many balls during scoring opportunities and the only players who excelled at points were my BOPB players. I don't know what the hell the manager was thinking with some of his selections particularly from Stade Français. Alright, they won the Top 14, but their success rides more so on their Argentine and Italian Internationals on the team more then their French ones. This is not the same for BOPB or Stade Toulouse.

New Zealand opened strong while Italy came out sleeping it would appear. I don't know what in the World they were doing during the majority of that match. Australia absolutely destroyed Japan with no real surprise and the Canada vs Wales match was probably one of the most entertaining so far outside of the opening match in Paris. Another thing I was surprised about was that Bobo was not actually selected to the Fiji National Team. What a bunch of retards.

Also yes, Chabal is a beast. The absolute nastiest player in the sport. The man enjoys pain and dishing it out more then any other sports athlete on this planet, period.
