Rudeezy, this is mr. fortysomething talking, but for under $10k you better buy either a Toyota or a Honda because you want it to last. If you cannot afford more $$$ (and neither could I when I was in college), the last thing you need is a $3k bill for a tranny or differential going out on you. With a camaro/stang purchased for $10k, you are not going to have any warranty coverage, you will be hanging out there butt naked. With auto repair shops charging minimum $65 per hour, if anything goes out, you are dead in the water with no wheels. Believe me, once you get out of college with your degree (and you will get one, right?), there will be plenty of time to get a nice ride.

Do not for a second think that a nice ride will get you the ladies. No. 1, do you want a woman who digs you for your wheels? Pretty shallow if you ask me. No. 2, throughout college and graduate school, the guys who seemed to get the hottest babes were not the dudes in a cool ride, they were the guys with no $$$ and no wheels. Really. True story. I even had a roommate who hooked up in SF all the time even though he had no car, they would come by to pick him up at 9 p.m. (after dinner) on Friday night. Why? Because he had confidence, never let them think that he thought they were such hot stuff, and he made them laugh. So please, think about your future $$$ plans when you get your new ride. (BTW, I just sold my cherry '66 Stang Conv so my wife and I could buy a new minivan.)

Wait so Rudeezy you don't have a car right now? If I were in your shoes and had a car right now I wouldn't get a new one, especially if you live on campus.

Jay- I do have a car, a 79 El Camino but I can't be driving that back and forth from college. I just need a nice dependable car right now.

What about one of those Chevy Cavs? I'd go Honda Civic though even though practically everyone drives those. Better to have something that lasts than something that always breaks down.

How about one of those low rider Chevelle's. You can put hydraulics in it so you can bounce and cruise to 900 watt amps of whatever music you listen to. [IMG]

Ask him if you can put some hydros and coils in there like they do in L.A. [IMG]

They got this one kit that makes your car bounce front hop, back hop, and side to side, or on three wheels or on one side only with the flick of a switch. LOL.

So you're not going to stay on campus? What's wrong with the El Camino?

For the first time in 25 years, European cars aren't as reliable as those made by U.S. automakers, Consumer Reports magazine says in its annual auto issue that hits newsstands today.

Asian automakers continue to lead the industry, the magazine says, but domestics topping the Europeans is a sea change.

Especially considering the high quality of cars the Europeans have been known for, "this year they seem to have dropped considerably," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' auto test department and head of its 327-acre testing facility in Connecticut.

In all, only eight of 41 European cars and trucks tested by Consumer Reports' editors and evaluated by their readers earned the coveted "recommended" check mark. </div>

If you really need a commuter car, just rock a civic or corolla. I'm looking into buying a car for my dad, who commutes 100+ miles per day and those are the two choices I'm researching. My dad doesn't really like expensive cars (he even thought my civic si was expensive at $16,800) and doesn't like the extras in his car (like power locks and windows, he's old school like that). For the $10Gs, you can put a nice down payment for a base model Corolla or Civic and those are around the $14K range.

volvos are sweet looking and built like tanks supposedly. the biggest problem is price; they run in the mid 20s starting out.
