There are way too many nay sayer's talking about the Pistons chances in this series. The bottom line is that the Pistons want it more and they are the best built team in the NBA to contend with the Lakers. The Lakers rely on high scoring, they will not get the scoring that they rely on. Rip will be able to wear on Kobe and slow his scoring. Rasheed will slow up both shaq and Malone. Shaq will find himself in foul trouble like usual against the pistons. Ben will definately pull down the boards and will take a charge from shaq and create turnovers. Lets face it that the non highscoring pistons can create points when needed and the defense will not waiver. This is a good team that will beat a fading older team.

Lakers rely on high scoring to win? Since when? The Lakers pride themselves on defense, but at the same time they have the offensive weapons to play a high scoring game. The Pistons have actually scored more points in the playoffs than the Lakers this year. These will be low scoring games, and the team who controls the paint will be the one winning the close games down the stretch. The Pistons have a lot to overcome with Shaq in the middle. They don't have the size or bodies to contend with Shaq and he's going to put pressure across the floor for a team not used to having to double team a player.

How can you say one team wants the title more than another? This is the Finals, and winning the trophy is the ultimate accomplishment for both teams. Everyone on the court is hungry for a ring, especially Payton and Malone. Once you get to the championship game, everyone on the court is going to lay it on the line.

Can you explain how Sheed is going to slow up BOTH Shaq and Malone? There's absolutely nothing he can do, but foul Shaq on defense. Sheed is not a physical player and Shaq outweighs him by 100+ lbs. Malone knows all the little annoying tricks and he's going to use it to get under Sheed's skin and take him mentally out of the game. Once Sheed loses his cool it's 'T' time and then shower time for him. Malone has also played against the two best powerforwards in the league with success. Garnett and Duncan both struggled against the Mailman in those series. I expect the success to continue on into this series for Malone's ability to guard quicker, more athletic powerforwards.

Shaq and Big Ben will both get their fair share of rebounds in this game. Big Ben is a beast on the glass, but Shaq has also been a lot more aggressive in each series in dominating the boards. I expect them to get clost to 20 rebounds a game each.

The Lakers have gotten outrebounded per game this playoffs. against the Pistons, i don't see the Lakers dominating the boards. i've said this many times....i think the Piston's big bodies are going to give Shaq the toughest time he's faced in the playoffs so far. certainly, they won't stop him, but i think they'll give him the most trouble thus far.

i wouldnt' say Duncan and KG "struggled" against Malone. both averaged over 20 and 10. maybe not their season averages, but i don't think they struggled.

Go Pistons... I want to see the Pistons win this one. But, if LA wins then no big deal. Should be a fun series!

Ben can't contend with Shaq. He has no offensive game to move Shaq away from the basket and make him work on defence. Also if they put Rip on Kobe, they're going to have major problems. Rip is nowhere as good as Kobe on the defensive end and neither is he better offensively. 'Sheed is not scoring as much as he used to, back when he was with the Blazers and he is not nearly as consistent as he needs to be if they're going to beat the Lakers.

I give the edge in the bench to Detroit with Okur, Williamson and Campbell but it won't nearly be enough. I say Lakers in 6.

The big thing that I have to address is the Rip and Kobe comment I got. If you haven't watched Kobe and Rip both in the playoffs then I can see the no contest comment. The fact is that Kobe is not nearly in the same physical stamina department that Rip is in. Rip could be on the floor from start to finish and still run circles around the perimeter non stop coming off of screens. Kobe will be fighting off screens and running with the tireless Rip all game every game it will wear at him alot. This will take points from the Lakers. The other thing is, ok, the Lakers scored less points than the pistons in the playoffs thats funny since the pistons were in 3 games that set records for lowest scoring halfs ever. Another thing is that when I had said that Sheed will slow malone and shaq it's not as if he'll stop either but odds are he won't find himself guarding shaq often. Cambell's big body will be used for hack a shaq and shaq hurts himself with his own foul trouble. Sheed is a changed man in detroit he isn't the same hot head of the past and can play the mental game right back now a day. Malone has been great these playoffs but Duncan and Garnett great as they are play a different defensive game than Sheed who will contend alot more shots and create more turnovers. Ben will be right there as well when shaq has his big body on the bench and just to slow malone in this series, not stop will make a big impact with a foul troubled O'neal and a tired Kobe, not to mention an already fairly ineffective Payton. Lets hope Fisher has something but the Lakers aren't winning a championship on the shoulders of Derek Fisher. I think it will be a good series but I say Pistons in 7 and only time will tell.

All very good points shape, but i would like to make a slight argument. [IMG]

Although i do agree 'Sheed won't stop Shaq and Malone, i do believe the rotation of bigmen Detroit has (Ben,Rasheed,Okur,Cambell etc) can slow down Shaq. Not completely stop S, that's impossible reallly Malone isn't as big of a threat, and I think he is stopped easier, possibly put Okur on him. Ben has been hitting that short little jumper, that could make Shaq on D. That will wear him out somewhat, making him less effective offensively. And as nick01gr said, Kobe will be worn out runnin around defending Rip, that is unless they decide to put George or Rush or any other swingmen they have to defend him.

that is why you have help defense on rip. im sure phil will have a plan to slow down rip from time to time. on paper the pistons matchup well and everything, but you have to play the game. there will be games where players won't show up and playing against the lakers you can't afford to have players not show up. like prince was absent for a few games against the nets and detroit lost 3 in a row. they cant afford to have him not show up and not have any production to have a shot to win.

doesnt matter that the lakers didnt score more than the pistons. lakers were playing teams that played good defense from the first round. if you get in a scoring match with the lakers, the pistons will lose. if this becomes a defensive series, then of course detroit has a shot.

nothing against the pistons, but it is hard to go against a dynasty in this situation. gary and malone are both hungry and shaq and kobe are still the best 1-2punch in the league. detroit hasnt been to the finals in years and its not good going into your first finals for those players and face an experienced dynasty. the cards seemed to be stacked, but thats why the games are played.

Wow, I don't see how I am basing a series on anything but the games themselves. I thought I could come in and give my honest opinion. It's evident the Pistons are huge underdogs in this series. I felt as though I would discuss why nobody is giving them a shot in this series. Nocturnal Emmissions well thats quite the two words you put together to describe a fan stating the simple matchups of the series to come. Well if anyone has anything else actually worth adding please do.

Bottom line is you can almost throw out all the stats of what Detroit has done in the playoffs thus far, because it means nothing. They're a great defensive team and they've done a nice job this year, but all those stats about how they held teams to such low scoring games doesn't mean anything. The East and West play completely different styles of basketball, and the Pistons have not seen any big players this year. It'll be a little different going from Jeff Foster to Shaquille O'Neal, don't you think? For the Lakers on the other hand, for the first time in the playoffs they won't have to worry about a huge inside threat. They're going from guys like Yao, Duncan and Garnett to Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace. That's a complete 180 for both teams, and that only favors the Lakers.

I'm hoping that the Pistons will. I was thinking they'd take around 2 or 3 games maximum. I'm sort of doubtful sadly. Simply because they're completely unselfish and team orientated. Although the coming of 'Sheed has really helped them along and upped their status as a team, they have no identifiable superstar. This is both a good thing and a bad thing, for they are a true team.

However, they have no Kobe or KG to go to. The closest they have to that is Big Ben, 'Sheed and Rip. Their defense is amazing, especially since Tayshaun's game has really stepped up more than a notch. They have a good chance of beating the Lakers even on good nights, not to mention that they have a great bench also. As a hopeful fan, I say they take it in 7 games. As a more realistic fan, Lakers in 5 or 6 games.

Yeah, yeah, the Pistons Win one in the Staple Center and thats just the beginning because noone gave them a chance to win that game and noone is giving them the chance to take it all, and that means the Lakers as well aren't giving Detroit a chance and it showed in game 1. We'll see what happens.

Ok, would you like to explain yourself why the Pistons will win this series after just ONE game??? Something you need to know. One game doesn't make a series. It's a race to four!!!!!! If you guys have already forgotten, three years ago the LA Lakers were faced with the same exact situation. Losing Game 1 to Larry Brown's Sixers in the NBA Finals, they came back and took Game 2, went to Philly for three games and destroyed the Sixers on their homecourt. Do you actually think the Los Angeles Lakers aren't capable of doing this again? Or do you just think we're just a "pushover" team??? Once again, let me ask you......where are your facts saying the Pistons will win this series???

this isn't Philly, my friend. That Philly team had Iverson and not much else. Plus, it took OT to win that one.

for every "fact" that the Lakers should win, i could give you a "fact" that the Pistons will win.

Just because someone picked against your team, doesn't make it any less valid than yours.

That is an arrogant statement if I ever saw one. The Pistons pride themselves on their defense and with defense anything is possible. All we heard from Lakers fans before this series began was how they were going to dominate this series. Oh how the tides have changed.

^ Funny thing about that comment on facts is, many Piston fans I see ARE using facts.. not that it's bad or anything.. just thought I should point that out.
