I'm getting a kick out of you guys "justifying" this deal. Mihm is a stiff. Banks is decent but was overrated. Atkins had one good year with the Magic and some dumb owner signed him for big bucks.

THis is just an awful deal for the Lakers. THey are OFFICIALLY done from playoff contention.

WHY?! I'm trying to see some positives in this trade, but there are very few... we had Gary Payton who still would have probably been pretty good this season (after all, he did average 14 and 6 last year, which is more than I think Banks or Atkins can do) in a new system, and he isn't bad for $5 mil. I hope Kupchak knows what he's doing... I mean I hope Buss knows what he's doing.. (because we all know that Buss makes the deals and Kupchak takes the blame). Hopefully Vujacic can do some big things next year, we need him to.

hmm and this coming from an orlando magic fan any ways i was just going to say this is a real good trade for the lakers i mean look at rick fox he doesnt count as a player anymore and gary payton is done in a year you know we werent going to resign him and he isnt gary payton any more basically we got 3 role players for 2 guys that are going to be done in a year i think we got the better deal think about it.

You guys do realize that even if GP and Fox stunk this season they'd be off the books and you guys can sign someone else.

Now you're stuck with Mihm & Atkins for the long run. Mihm is a poor man's Travis Knight while Atkins is a poor man's D-Fish.

Deep down inside, I know you guys realize this was a dumb deal.

Losing J.West might be one of the biggest mistakes in Laker history. Cause it's obvious Buss/Mitch/whomever has no clue what they're doing.

well i agree with some of the replyers in this thread that gp is better than chucky.

But u sometimes you got to give to recieve.

i think the lakers got a great aquisition in mihm he has alot of potentail and mayube a winning atmospher and maybe vet divac could help him a little.

Now for the celtics they got a great defensive minded pg in Payton to help ot Pierce so there backcourt is nice.

Its just tehre backcourt that scares me.

I have no idea what the Lakers goals are anymore for next season. I thought they were trying to gear up for a playoff run by signing Vlade, but now they go and trade away their starting point guard for some role players. These things bother me about the trade.

    1. Chris Mihm is a free agent, why couldn't the Lakers just offer him a contract?

    2. Now the Lakers are going to have to deal with two young guards, Sasha & Banks, instead of having Payton play for a couple of years and groom Sasha into the future PG role.

    3. The Lakers just traded away two players coming off the salary cap next season, so instead of being able to be a player in free agency next year, they now have a higher payroll after this season.

I really hope there is another trade in the works, otherwise this makes no sense. The Lakers are a team in limbo at this point. No room to operate for rebuiding, and not enough talent to make the playoffs.

    4. This is going to make it a lot harder to get 'Reef from the Blazers.

Also what happens if Kobe is convicted? At least Payton could have produced consistently, instead of having to rely on Atkins & Banks.

    This trade stinks!

The more I think about this trade...it is crap..pure crap, Shape was right...what are our goals for next year..we have 2 players about to enter their primes: Kobe and Lamar, we have Vlade who will only give 20 mins a game and a bunch of young players such as: Kareem, Sasha, Mihm, Butler, Banks, and Walton..I dont know what we are doing but the playoffs are going to be a lot harder to reach, We could possibly be in the lottery next year..lets start scouting..Kobe can carry a team if you give him GOOD PLAYERS around him..not just Odom and Caron..

Funny you mention that...because Kobe Bryant was the 13th pick in the 1996 draft, and we won three straight rings two years after he came to Los Angeles, and after Shaq was brought in that same year.

what is everyones problem? not making the play-offs, its the freaking lakers and we have kobe freaking bryant. look at some of the other lineups in the west that made it last season, the nuggets, memphis they didn't have that many awesome players, how many had all-stars? we have at least 2 all-stars in divac and kobe, yes divac was an all-star, odom and butler are possibly future all-stars along with the other rookies, sophmores and third-year players. are line-up isn't that bad, not that awesome. but were going to make the play-offs.

If Kobe got convicted then the Lakers wouldn't have had a chance at the playoffs anyway.

I'm not saying that the Lakers are gonna be great next season but they could actually turn out solid. They're an ENTIRELY different team so there are a lot of unanswered questions. A lot of things could help/hurt the Lakers like: if Sasha turns out good, if any of the Lakers existing roleplayers (Rush, Walton, Medvedenko) step up, if Vlade and Mihm can hold theit own, if Kobe will be a team player, if the Heat players (Odom, Butler, Grant) will step up, etc.

I myself heard the news this morning, and with ourselves trading Gary Payton and Rick Fox away is a good thing because not only were these players ineffective at best, but it saved us million of dollars in financial stability. Something that is a tremendous plus. On the other side of things however, I don't like the fact we picked up two point guards in Chucky Atkins and Marcus Banks. I myself don't know too much about these two players, but it looks pretty undecided on who will be our starting point guard next year. Or maybe Kupchak has a plan to send one or two of the guards to New Jersey to try and acquire Jason Kidd. I wouldn't be surprised if the cards turn in that favor. But I like the Chris Mihm move. A tall young athletic center with some upside to his game. And believe me, acquiring Mihm that's 7'0" tall and serviceable is much better than Divac or a Slava Medvedenko. Maybe Mihm will have a say on who'll be the center for next year's Laker team.

To me though, it makes no sense now that we have three guards that could possibly fight for one starting point guard spot in Banks, Atkins, and Vujacic. Unless one of the two is going to New Jersey along with perhaps a Devean George or Kareem Rush to New Jersey for Jason Kidd. Because let's be realistic here....our players for the PG spot are mediocre at best, and there just isn't any talent whatsover at the point. So if our management is trying to deal one of these guards and possibly a Devean George or Kareem Rush to New Jersey for Kidd would make so much sense.

I like this trade. I, too, see Mihm's potential. Most of you seem to forget that Mihm is still young. Don't think that his numbers fully represent his future contributions as I see a huge possibility for growth. We now have a quick point gaurd that can match up with the Bibbys, and it isn't as if Payton would have fit with Kobe and Odom wanting to move the ball.
Chucky and Banks are only needed for two thing, defense and spot-up shooting. They can't do any worse than Payton.

And as I mentioned before, we don't need a true point gaurd like Payton to handle the ball and initiate the offense so we obviously don't need Kidd either...much less with his huge contract. Kobe will probably be handling the ball most of the game anyway.

i like the trade, payton didnt perform as well as he did last year and he most likely will not next considering the offense will not be surronded around him, fox is gone no biggie considering hes no good anymore and we got another 7 footer hopefully rudy t. can work with to bring out some rebounding power and we also got 2 knew point guards that are also young and probably split playing time

the lakers r just rebuilding and most likely now that they have traded these 2 vets looking to get some good draft picks over the next few years and expect them to make some big nba trades cuz there just reformatting there team

the lakers got the personal in my opinion they just need to figure out how to play together and execute the game they play

I think this was a good deal for the lakers but now there stacked at the 1, 2, and 3 slots. They got Kobe starting at SG not matter what and Rush, and Sasha backing him up there and at PG they got Atkins, Banks, and Sasha once again. At SF, Lamar Odom who is most probably going to be the starter at SF if not PF, Caron Butler, Devean George and Luke Walton. Mihm and Vlade are in to front court if not Vlade and Odom which will throw butler into the starting line. The back ups in the front court are probably Brian Grant and Slava Medvedenko. There stacked at the SF more than at the gaurd slots. Holy crap they got a lot of people on there squad.
