I think it's because Dunleavy doesn't really do anything unless there's floor spacing to allow him to maneuver. He won't do something he can't do which is to outquick his defender and take him off the dribble, but he'll try to disrupt a defense by either driving in between a dismantled zone or he'll go baseline and find somebody that can rotate over for the shot, cut toward the hoop or be waiting on the perimeter for the extra pass to cycle to the opposite wing. Lots of offensive options with Dunleavy who utilizes textbook fundamentals, floor awareness, fluid motion with the ball and a big first step to make up for lack of explosiveness. That's why I'm hoping we keep him, but I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't.

I think the key to our winning is our depth and of course Baron Davis. We probably have one of the two most nightmarish mismatches coming off our bench and it would suck to lose them since we know Zarko or Pietrus can bring all that energy and put the ball in the bucket and beat up all those older MLE bench players. Zarko and Pietrus can also create their own shots, but Pietrus has more daring to jump up in the air, finish and get hard fouled so he can go to the line. Those nights where he scores all those points, he gets a lot of And1 3 point plays and doesn't hesistate when he feels good about making a catch and shoot baseline 3 pointer. Add Biedrins into the mix with Baron running the point and you have a highly energetic bench more than Brian Cardinal, Eduardo Najera, and Jerome Williams combined.

    Interesting find, though Zhone.

Yeah, I still think that Dunleavy would be great trade bait if we could get back a solid big man - but I wouldn't want him to just walk, I'd rather resign him unless he was greedy. Another player could step in and be as effective as Dun at least in terms of overall game, possibly Pietrus, but Dun's a good fit our system right now.

The question is does Dun want to win or does he just want the money. I think he just wants to win. He doesn't have fun when his team skills are going to waste, that's probably why he is playing more aggressive now than before when we were losing.

My opinion are usually very extreme about thwese things. He's just driven me crazy almost his whole career until this last half a season. i didnt know about the +/- stats either. And I dont think pietrus is ready to or big enough to stop big SFs like Rashard Lewis or Devean George. At least MDJ can play a few positions. i know the guys all about winning but i want more consistentcy. If he plays like he played the last two games next season, it would justify his nice contract and high draft position.

Also do we have Bird rights on MDJ, Peitrus, and Zarko? Would that allow us to keep all of them? Thx

Yes, all of them, but I don't think it's possible with Chris Cohan. We'd need the non-gambling Warriors basketball version of Eddie Debartolo.

The other problem is that it's next to impossible to move Murphy, and Dunleavy is good traid bait for a 4, but we can't package him together with Murphy because nobody wants a 3 and 4 that can't play D (sound familiar) so we'd have to work a 3 way trade somehow. Not sure how that'd work.

Well, CH, you can always claim "team defense" will save us from the other team's jaw-dropping, gravity defying layups.

Two guys that aren't really that quick to begin with and playing team defense is only for show in my opinion. That's like putting two people that mutter to themselves together in one subway car so it appears they're having a conversation with one another.

I can believe two average defenders with okay quickness playing team defense can be good, but one slightly average and one poor? The only guy who is defensively aware is Mike Dunleavy, Jr, but he's kind of slow to contest shots and shooters just don't fear him enough. Troy Murphy just plain doesn't try sometimes, I don't know why.

Also in man-to-man defensive schemes, Cliff got pissed at Dunleavy because he kept getting taken to the hole and then not rotating over on the dribble penetrator or shooter after the kickout.

I greatly prefer Murph over Dun. Murph is our best rebounder and I especially like him when he drived to the basket for that 2 or 3 game stretch toward the end of the season (but not the very end). He is great for spreading the D as well, the other PFs have to come out or Baron will drive and dish every time. He also seems to not be affected by the team's shooting; when the team is shooting horribly, he shoots like he always does which is pretty decent. Hopefully someone will inspire him to try when he is playing D. But then again, when we put up 110 points a game, we dont need to stress D that much (until the playoffs).

I think Dun is good but in our run and gun offense we need more athleticism and defense. I'm not for giving him away but if we get someone who can shoot, defand, and finish then all we would really lose is a good pass here and there.

Yeah, Murph has some impressive drives. Much like Dun, he was a former guard but grew up a lot - and then transitioned to a forward. He used to be way more athletic before gaining the weight, I remember (before they were drafted in 2001) how J-Rich (who wasn't even his teammate back then) was amazed at how Murphy threw down a reverse dunk on NBA players at a UCLA pick up game.

The athletic guy who can shoot, defend and finish.. that's asking for a lot. Teams who have those guys aren't giving them up. Out of the guys who fit that description - Ron Artest, Richard Jefferson, Shane Battier, James Posey, Tayshaun Prince, Andre Igoudala, all of them are going to take a lot to trade for. Maybe we can find something through the draft? I bet teams would take Dun in an instant for any of the lottery picks after #5, but is that worth it?

Minny is probably getting rid of Sczerbiak, and if they draft Danny Granger, maybe they'll want Dunleavy for him? This is why I don't like the W's drafting guys that aren't solid on both ends, but Dunleavy does have vision of the floor, shot range, passing and handles.

i dont mean Artest calibur players but guys more like Jumain Jones, Posey, etc just good role players not 1st or second best players on their respective teams. I'm sure lots of teams could use a guy like Mike with excellent court vision and good offense. Sczerbiak would be an upgrade offensively but he is less athletic than Dun and probably worse defensively (i dont really know) and his contract is huge.

Well, there are always the sleeper guys - role-player guys like Damien Wilkins, Ronald Dupree, or Jones. Ansu Sesay was another guy who fit that role, but he didn't show enough for us to keep him. Maybe we should ask Pietrus' brother to come over and help us play some defense. [IMG]

I haven't seen Sesay, I figure he'll be back in summer ball again, looking for a job here or in Europe. Mickael's brother, Florent, is a bit older, a tiny bit taller, and the same kind of defender. Unfortunately, not too much of an offensive game.

Well 6'7 is tall enough to gaurd SFs especially if he has a wingspan like his brother. And if he is anywhere near as athletic as Mickael he should be able to get plenty of dunks and layups off of Baron assists.

Sesay did look promising as a Warrior. He seemed to carry a good attitude, played D on several positions, handled the rock, passed and made all the open shots that were given to him. It definitely wasn't like watching Rodney White and developing sore eyebrows from cringing too much.

I hope and pray we don't get Wallyworld. He's the same guy that called the Warriors clowns, doesn't play defense, hogs the ball, and is probably the most overrated all-star in recent time.

If we lose Dunleavy, I wonder if we can take a look at Darius Rice. I wonder if he even still plays basketball, though. Some of these guys maybe fell back on their degree after they graduated and didn't get drafted. Also if we don't care much about scoring, there's Chris Jeffries. 6'8, 225, possible lockdown defender and set shooter. He can't really pass or dribble, but you sick him on the athletic small forwards that are too strong for any of our guards to guard.

Lee Nailon is a free agent this summer. Would he go at or under the MLE? He seems to be athletic and a good scorer and rebounder. I know nothing of his D though.

Lee Nailon is definitely not athletic. [IMG] Good scorer and rebounder, maybe, but with horrible defense. The guy is what happens to good college power forwards who are undersized (6'7"), even their post game can't save them. Nailon, to his immense credit, developed a great jump shot to save him and give him a much longer career than other long-failed undersized fowards.

He'd be a 12th man on the W's, and likely be signable at the league minimum (about 360,000, the NBA boosts it to a bit over a million.)

I think hes not too bad athletically. Maybe athletic isnt the right word but hes not unathletic. Alright then hes out because of lack of D and lack of athleticism.
