Darko & Delfino Face a Tough Summer

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">AUBURN HILLS -- Before Game 2 on Tuesday, Darko Milicic sat in front of his locker talking about his summer plans.

"I am looking forward to playing for the (Serbian) national team," he said. "That's all I am thinking about."

Milicic has an excellent chance to make and contribute to the Serbian team in the European Championships in late July and early August.

But what about the Pistons' summer-league team, which plays in Las Vegas in early July?

"No, I am only thinking about national team," he said. "I want to go home (for the summer)."

Well, his thinking changed in a matter of hours, just long enough for president Joe Dumars to remind him how essential his presence is on the Pistons' summer-league team -- for his development and the team's. Besides, there is no scheduling conflict with his national team.

"It's Joe's decision," Milicic said after practice Wednesday. "Whatever he wants me to do, I am not going to be mad."

Milicic's agent, Marc Cornstein, confirmed that all parties are on the same page in reference to Milicic's summer adventures.

"To the best of my knowledge, as long as there is an agreement (collective bargaining agreement) reached between the league and the players association, it is my understanding that Darko will play on the summer team," Cornstein said.

The Pistons plan to play Milicic, and rookie Carlos Delfino, close to 40 minutes a game during the two-week summer session. Milicic, who is finishing his second NBA season, has never played in a summer-league game -- something the organization believes has slowed his development.

Milicic might be there in body, but his mind will be eager to get with his national team.

"For me, it is more important to play on the national team," he said. "It is much better basketball, much better competition."

Cornstein was impressed and not the least surprised by Milicic's aggressiveness in Game 2. He took an elbow in the chest from 76ers forward Marc Jackson but stood his ground and even shoved Jackson away.

"Darko doesn't back down from anybody," Cornstein said. "One day, the people of Detroit are going to see who Darko really is." </div>

Why exactly don't they play him during the regular season? Are you telling me that every game is too important to play the #2 pick in the draft? I'm glad to hear that he took an elbow and held his ground. One of the biggest knocks on him in 2003 was that he was too weak in his post and could not hold his ground.
