Yeah, I expected some push back on that trade. I'm not a fan of his game or excited about his future outlook so it was pretty easy to let him go.

FWIW, initially had Layman as the 2nd player, but thought NYK would need more incentive to take on Crabbe's contract.

The draft part is ok, the trades though? Yikes.

Not even Paul Allen would be happy, and this plan seems solely catered to his balance sheet. Are you his accountant?

Solid draft if we can land Collins.

Not at all interested in Motley though if a prospect like Mushidi is available that early in the second round. Motley is a low-ceiling prospect.

This roster doesn't really change much. Thad Young isn't a big difference maker. I'm a huge Crabbe hater on S2 but that Knick deal is garbage. Vonleh at least is showing flashes. O'Quinn has plateaued - a Carl Landry level big. He would be a solid get if you can get him on the cheap. But definitely not this deal. It's a salary dump so we can strike out in FA again.

Outside Collins this plan is meh - it keeps this team in purgatory.

Take out Vonleh for KOQ, keep Vonleh in the starting lineup, trade Crabbe for free (someone would take him), and figure out who you are going to draft at 15 when ZCollins is not there.

Is Mushidi still in the this draft?

Anyways, I don't necessarily disagree with any of this. Just tried to lay out a realistic "Plan C" offseason based on Neil's exit interview comments plus his past tendencies.

This is the most realistic off-season plan I've seen. It doesn't really move the needle a ton, obviously, but it makes the team slightly better (I like Young more than Vonleh, and I like the new bench a bit more than the old bench) while streamlining the payroll.

Outside of the Nurkic trade, when do Blazer transactions ever "move the needle?" It's like waiting for the Idaho Vandals to get a blue chip football recruit.

Rarely, though that's true for most teams. Blockbusters are the exception, not the norm. The best chance you have for getting stars is either through making an excellent choice in the draft or picking up an intriguing player and seeing him develop beyond expectations. If Nurkic remains at star level going forward, he's a nice example of the second case.

Can we add our own plans? I'll just add mine here instead of starting a new thread.

    Draft night:

Trade: #15, #20, 2019 first (top 10 protected. This will appeal more than #26) Allen Crabbe, and Meyers Leonard to IND for Paul George and Al Jefferson.

Package #26 and Harkless to move up and secure Terrance Ferguson.

Then trade into the second round for Lessort.

    Lillard, Napier, Quarterman
    McCollum, Ferguson, Connaughton
    George, Turner, Layman
    Vonleh, Aminu, Lessort
    Nurkic, Jefferson, Davis

    Ummm....

If we're trading for PG that means we're trying to contend right away. Therefore, why would we trade Harkless for Ferguson when Ferguson won't be ready to play? That makes no sense to me.

Al Jefferson is an awful player. 95 ORTG on shots he takes, and he's an awful defender. I understand taking him as part of the Indiana deal, but there's no way I want him in the rotation if we're really trying to contend. I'd rather bring Udoh back from Europe and play him.

    Mine:

    Draft Justin Jackson 15th
    Draft Player-to-be-traded later 20th

    Trade 26th, Aminu, 2020 MIA 2nd to ORL for 33 and 35
    Draft Jonah Bolden 33rd
    Draft Jordan Bell/D.J. Wilson/P.J. Dozier 35th

Trade Ezeli, Davis, 2019 1st Round Pick to IND for Thaddeus Young

    Free Agency:

After BOS lands Hayward, do this:

BOS Gets: 20th Pick, 2018 Swap POR 1sts,
    NYK Gets: Harkless, Leonard,
    POR Gets: Crowder, O'Quinn

Sign Ekpe Udoh for BAE (~$3M per)
Use MLE on Thabo Sefelosha ($8M for 1 year, TO 2nd year)
    - Sefelosha would be a vet/insurance player, and would be told as such. Would get offered the best contract he could possibly get to be such. Could be a helpful expiring contract to trade at the deadline.

Crowder, Sefelosha, Young, and O'Quinn are all good two-way players.

    Lillard (36) / McCollum (12) / Napier
    McCollum (23) / Crabbe (25) / Sefelosha
    Crowder (28) / Turner (20) / Layman
    Vonleh (18) / Young (24) / O'Quinn (6) /Bolden
    Nurkic (34) / O'Quinn (14) / Udoh

    D-League Contracts: Quarterman, Wilson/Bell/Dozier

So then the goal is to flutter around in purgatory forever?

The only thing I agree with the OP on in the impact Zach Collins would have. Fringe at best

Because we don't need Harkless in this scenario. Ferguson may or may not be ready to play, doesn't really matter, you don't make draft picks to fill needs. I just like his long term potential more than Harkless. Ferguson is probably an immediate upgrade over him as a shooter.

Jefferson is fine as a backup. He can score easy buckets. An older version of Okafor. Bench players are bench players because they have flaws.

Allow me to pair a theory. We talk about "realistic" plans. And then we talk about plans that make us a contender. I'm off the belief that these are basically mutually exclusive. Something "unrealistic" needs to happen in order for teams to become contenders.
    • Stephen Curry becoming an MVP level player was not "realistic".
    • Lebron leaving Miami and returning to Cleveland was not "realistic".
    • Boston trading for a twice-rejected midget and him becoming an all-NBA player was not "realistic".
    • Dirk suddenly becoming the best player in the league for a playoff run was not "realistic".
    • Miami forming the Heatles was not "realistic".
    • The Lakers trading Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol was not "realistic".
If we want our team to be a contender, we need to entertain a little bit of unrealism.
