We should have a general Olympics thread. Thriller softball game. Japan led 1-0 and had no hitter going through five innings. US managed to scratch out tying run in the sixth mainly by hustling to break up double play. Then a player who had gone 1 for 12 hit a walkoff home run for US, their first homer of the Olympics.
This 8-time olympian, 46 yo woman completely impresses me, awesome story: https://www.espn.com/olympics/story...ell-record-setting-eighth-appearance-olympics
Anyone watch the two 13 year old's get the gold and a 16 year old girl the bronze in street skate boarding. Crazy how young those girls are, but how good they are too.
I watched that dude do his floor routine and he looked like he was fucking his shit up. He looked like he was in pain, he landed flips on one foot and when he did land on both feet he stumbled towards that bad leg. I think he sacrificed his health for that gold medal and if that's his thing, I'm glad the sacrifice at least paid off.
U.S. women's basketball team beats Nigeria 81-72 to win 50th straight game in Olympics (espn.com)Many of you forgot about them!!!
Highlights of the Australia v USA women’s soccer match. With about 30 minutes left in the match, both teams decided they’d settle for a draw, and virtually stopped playing.
Simone Biles withdrew from a final because she wasn't in a good place mentally and felt too much pressure to win. I'm trying to empathize, but come on! She trained so hard all these years, have confidence in the work to live with the results! That said, without their families, the support system for mental health has to come from within. It appears that something is really weighing her down mentally-- where is the coaching in all this?
If she's not right mentally, she could land wrong, suffer a life or career threatening injury. C'mon Man! She's accomplished everything she could ever ask for in Olympic Competition already. If she's not right, why do it. She's in a no win. You're not the only one saying c'mon. If she competed while being off in her mind, and sucked, we'd hammer her for that too. If she was your daughter, and she said, dad, i'm not right. Would you say, suck it up?
i can see that but i'm definitely not saying suck it up. I'm saying that she's seemingly put too much pressure on winning and being perfect. And that the work/training she has done clearly should be enough to get her Gold without the pressure. Also, as I edited into my original post, I just don't think she currently has the support system to get her through this without family/fans. And Gymnastics coaching has always seemed very suspect. I wonder if something else is adding to the pressure. She didn't look right in and after her recent vault. Confidence looks shook for some reason.
Could be. Whatever it is, take time, get over it, if she can, and go get it. But if she can't, move on to another year. She's an amazing athlete. If she never performs again, she's done amazing. Hopefully that's worst case. Social media has made being a public figure, tougher than ever. Haters and bullies are more empowered than ever before, with a lack of consequences for their behavior. Truly sad sign of the times.
Twitter literally puts a GOAT behind her name when you hashtag it. Probably too much pressure. True GOATS transcend that.
