MLSSoccer.com is reporting that Sunil Gulati and the USSF are courting Marco Bielsa to serve as technical director. The Argentine who coached Chile in the 2010 World Cup would be responsible for all aspects of player development throughout the US National System. Bob Bradley and other coaches would remain in place. Currently, no one serves in this role and it has been to the great detriment of player development in the United States. Wilmer Cabrera has made a consistent effort to define a playing style for the Bradenton Academy that houses the U-17 national team, but that academy simply cannot cover the country. MLS has also developed a certain style of play, but those 15 US based academies don't even come close to covering the US. Putting one person in charge of dictating how youth players will be developed is a major and necessary step in the right direction for the US. I just hope they find someone up to the challenge who knows full well what that challenge is.
