Big Names Excluded From FIFA World Player Of The Year Nominations

Francesco Totti, Cesc Fabregas, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are among the big names left off the list of 30 players nominated for this year’s FIFA World Player of the Year award.

Roma captain, Francesco Totti, who won the European Golden Boot last season and was outstanding as his club reached the quarterfinal of the Champions League, has astonishingly failed to make the final cut for the FIFA Player of the Year award.

But Totti is not the only high-profile player not be nominated. Inter’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been in magnificent form this campaign, has also been excluded. And there was no place for Bayern Munich goal-machine Luca Toni or Valencia hitman David Villa. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s mercurial midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who has been undoubtedly the best player in the Premiership so far this season, is also absent.

Italy is the most represented nation on the list of nominees with five players. These are Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Nesta, Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo. England and France both have four, Argentina and Brazil three, Germany and Portugal two, and seven nations with one player.

Barcelona are the leading club team with seven nominations, including Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi. Chelsea have five, Milan four, Manchester United and Bayern Munich three, Liverpool and Real Madrid two, and Juventus, Inter, Lyon and Villarreal one.

Totti’s exclusion from this list of 30 players will only add weight to the claims of many people, who say that the FIFA World Player of the Year is a second-rate award, especially in comparison to the prestigious Ballon d’Or, handed out for the European Footballer of the Year.

    The full list of nominees:

Argentina: Lionel Messi, Juan Roman Riquelme, Carlos Tevez

    Brazil: Juninho, Kaka, Ronaldinho

    Cameroon: Samuel Eto’o

    Czech Republic: Petr Cech

England: Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, John Terry

France: Thierry Henry, Franck Ribery, Lilian Thuram, Patrick Vieira

    Germany: Miroslav Klose, Philipp Lahm

    Ghana: Michael Essien

    Holland: Ruud van Nistelrooy

Italy: Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo

    Ivory Coast: Didier Drogba

    Mexico: Rafael Marquez

    Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco

    Spain: Fernando Torres

Fabregas is easily better then Gerrard. Look at the season so far. Fabregas has 6 goals in 10 or so games. What is Liverfool's Gerrard got?

Gerrard will never be the player that Fabregas is. Again Gerrard is only good for England, as for teams, he basically sucks and is useless. Mascherano is much better then him.

Who would you guys choose from that list as the fifa world player of the year?

For me it would have to be Ruud van Nistelrooy, he basically saved the season for Real last season, and they won the league. Scored a bunch of goals, important ones too, and is their best striker right now.

After you. Fabregas is the best in the premier league at the moment if not the world. Fabregas is a premium steak whereas Gerrard is a can of Spam. Get used to it there's a new king in town.

Also Man_U_Barmy_Army has admitted that Fabregas is better the Rooney. But still Super Cesc>S*it Stevie

Max, your idiocy just radiates of you. How is Fabregas the best midfielders in the premiership, nevermind the world. Are you turning into Dan, relying on stats to back up your ridiculous theories? I'm sure little school kid Fabregas will get on the list once he has started puberty and won a medal in his life!

How did you manage to fit Adebayour in the top ten players? How stupid, scores a one off goal and all of a sudden he is amazing!

The only thing Fabregas has on Gerrard is passing, nothing else.
