Excellent work CC....under the Mo Cheeks one you should change "too" to "two" I think.it is.very well worded and I feel better informed for reading it..!
Good Article, seems like a response to your own comment about Stotts being the worst. Well done though!
It is in part a response to that. Very perceptive. I was mad when I said that. I didn't really think he was the worst. Then I thought who is the worst? Best? Then decided it would be fun to do an article about.
I have fonder memories of P.J. Carleismo now than when he coached for us. Probably because he's been a broadcaster a few years and a decent one at that. Talk about a guy who go out of the Big East and never looked back.
A few of them I almost feel bad for, like They had bad rosters or bad situations that wasnt really there fault
Stotts has a TERRIBLE Playoff record. How does that compare with the other coaches. Ramsey and Adelman and Dunleavy are certainly better, but I'm curious about the rest.
Todd, Inman, McCloskey, Wilkens, Pritchard, and Canales never made the playoffs. Of the 8 coaches who did, 4 have a better winning percentage than Stotts. Only 3 have more wins. Rick Adelman (6 years) 36-33 .522% (3 1st round exits, 1 WCF exit, 2 finals exits) Mike Dunleavy ( 4 years) 18-18 .500% (2 1st rnd exits, 2 conference final exits) Jack Ramsay (10 years) 29-30 .492% (5 1st rnd exits, 2 semi finals exits, 1 championship) Nate McMillan (7 years) 6-12 .333 (3 1st rnd exits) Terry Stotts (7 years) 11-34 .314% ( 3 1st rnd exits, 2 semi final exits) Maurice Cheeks (4 years) 3-7 .300% (2 1st rnd exits) PJ Carlesimo ( 3 years) 3-9 .250% (3 1st rnd exits) Mike Schuler (2.65 years) 2-6 .250 (2 1st rnd exits)
PJ and Schuler had a shared weakness. Their teams would peak too early in the season, then flame out late and in the play-offs. Nate and Terry also under-achieved in the post season, but there wasn't the sense of them burning out their players the way PJ and Schuler seemed to.
Damn....Adelman has more than 3x as many Playoff wins in 1 season less. That is a very low win percentage for Stotts given the amount of years. You'd think at some point there would be a little more success. And even the wins he has, one series win took one of the most epic shots in Playoff history and the other took 2 all-start getting injured. He's even has some good fortune on his side. Take that out and it could be worse.
To be fair does the bad fortune count too? Like Wes’s injury, or having to play GS a few times, when absolutely no one was really playing GS any better than the Blazers were, 1st year of Nurk he was hurt and couldnt go and he was their best match up advantage. I mean i get it Stotts has really not proven to be a good playoff coach. I think its unfair to write off the success by saying it was luck or favorable circumstances, without also mentioning that some of the failure had unfortunate circumstances too.
Fair enough...but then be better and progress enough to not play Golden State in the 1st round. Now it can be said they did that by progressing to the #3 seed....which was then one of the worst losses in NBA history for a team with HCA.
Well I said after the Pelican series they shouldve got a new coach. I still believe that to be the case. Well the good news is Portland made it into the history books!
Yeah, he was a real likeable guy. The players wanted him too. I think after he replaced Nate, the Blazers won their first couple (I remember beating the bulls) abd it gave the fans something to be excited about again.
There are a few reasons Stotts remains despite his poor playoff record Injuries Rebuild No better candidate to replace him Players like him - he hasn't lost them He has made the playoffs 5 times He has made the 2 rnd twice. That said, he has been coach 7 years. The only other Blazers coaches to last this long are Nate (7years) and of course Jack Ramsay (10 years) who won the trophy his first year here. No way Stotts lasts 10 unless he wins a trophy. Next month on March 15th, he will have been coach as long as McMillan and likely surpass him. But, will he remain the coach after this season? How long does he have before his time is up? I think Stott's time is short. He won't make 10 to tie Jack.
I get what your saying. And, at first I was agreeing. Then I remembered last year. The Blazers were all healthy...well except Harkless. There is no excuse for getting swept by the Pelicans with HCA. There has been a good deal of misfortune, but at some point you have to overcome it.
