Reliever Mitchell Boggs, making his bid to be the Cardinals' interim closer, zipped through a scoreless ninth to preserve a 5-3 victory in the evening game Wednesday at Busch Stadium.

The win got the Cardinals a split of the day-night double bill.

Boggs worked a scoreless ninth to cement the two-run victory and his first professional save. The ninth inning Wednesday night was Boggs' first save opportunity in the ninth inning as a major leaguer. Boggs struck out one, allowed one hit and got two other outs from his infielders.

The Cardinals bullpen pitched four scoreless innings. Boggs, Jason Motte and Eduardo Sanchez retired 12 of the 13 batters they faced. Sanchez went 6-for-6 in his two scoreless innings of work.
