    Length and athleticism, check.

    The Milwaukee Bucks have that.

    Perimeter shooting?

    Not so much.

The Bucks sent a clear message Thursday night they wanted to upgrade their shooting as they selected Nevada-Las Vegas freshman guard Rashad Vaughn with the 17th overall pick in the NBA draft and made a trade with Toronto to acquire veteran combination guard Greivis Vasquez.

Milwaukee sent a protected 2017 first-round pick and the 46th pick in Thursday's draft to the Raptors. The first-rounder was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers last summer in the trade that sent Jared Dudley to the Bucks.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Vaughn worked out for the Bucks on Monday and was considered a high riser in the draft after excelling in the predraft process. The second-youngest player in the draft at 18, his freshman season at UNLV was cut short by a left meniscus injury.

But the Minneapolis native still showed enough to be named the Mountain West freshman of the year while averaging 17.8 points and 4.8 rebounds.

The Bucks also took a close look at Vaughn at a Los Angeles workout held by agent Sam Goldfeder and Excel Sports Management.

Golden State's run to the NBA championship has highlighted the power of the perimeter, with "Splash Brothers" Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson pacing the Warriors.

But Hammond said it wasn't a Golden State factor that influenced the Bucks' thinking Thursday.

"It was just the Milwaukee Bucks factor and the need for shooting," Hammond said. "We were talking about how guys' stock can rise a few days ago. Rashad shot the ball extremely well in that (Los Angeles) workout. I think he got a lot of people's attention there. Then he was in our last workout here on Monday and shot the ball extremely well for us again.
