My twenty minute take after watching his highlights (which is probably wrong and is certainly premature)? He reminds me a ton of Mirotic. 6'10/7'2" wingspan power forward who is active, smart, can shoot a little, and has a little bit of an inside game as well. Looks to me like a value pick.
Portis' game won't be the same in the pros. He's a size too small to be consistently effective in the post in the pros. The cutoff for scoring in the post consistently seems to be around 6'10/7'4" or so. Portis is going to have to play outside in and relegate the use of his post game, like Mirotic, to when opposing teams try to match up small. I'm usually pretty optimistic about who the Bulls pick -- with the exception of Jimmy Butler who looked to me like a power forward, so take this for what it's worth. Portis was a guy who stood out to me before the draft as having way more skill than the people slotted around him, and he slipped much farther than he was slotted. He was the guy I wanted from this draft. Anybody else see the Mirotic comparison? Good handle; good hands; good motor; runs passing lanes; good quickness; not an above the rim player; perimeter shooting; some decent post moves. Same weaknesses too: Not a run-jump athlete; still learning positioning on the defensive glass; not ideal length. I'm psyched.
