"The Cardinals have completed their 25-man puzzle by agreeing with free agent catcher Gerald Laird on a one-year contract, pending Laird passing a team physical. Laird, 31, has appeared in eight major-league seasons and served as the Texas Rangers' starter in 2007 and the Detroit Tigers' primary catcher in 2009. Laird is a career .242 hitter considered solid defensively. He has thrown out 38 percent of would-be base-stealers throughout his career. The Cardinals had approached Bengie Molina, older brother of the Cardinals' two-time Gold Glove winner Yadier, about serving a reserve role. However, the Cardinals quickly moved on to Laird after Molina, who is pondering retirement, declined the lesser role."
