"The St. Louis Cardinals have signed 33-year-old free-agent infielder Nick Punto to a one-year, $700,000 contract. Punto, the Minnesota Twins' opening day starter at third base last season, provides insurance for oft-injured third baseman David Freese, as well as projecting as a back-up at shortstop and second base. The 5-9, 190-pound Punto has a career-batting mark of .247 with 13 HR, 198 RBI and 91 stolen bases in eight-plus seasons with the Twins (2004-10) and Philadelphia Phillies (2001-03). He had his best overall season in 2006 for the Twins, batting .290 with 21 doubles and 45 RBI. A switch-hitter, Punto batted .238 in just 88 games to start last season with the Twins while dealing with nagging hamstring injuries that forced him to the DL twice."
