One week after designating him for assignment, the Houston Astros released outfielder Carlos Gomez Friday.

The move was made official on the transaction page of the team's website.

Upon designating Gomez for assignment, Houston had 10 days to work out a potential trade or assign him to a minor league team, but it was unable to come to terms on a deal, which means he is now a free agent.

The 2016 season has been the worst of the 30-year-old Dominican Republic native's MLB career, as he is hitting just .210 with five home runs, 29 RBI and 13 stolen bases.

Houston acquired Gomez in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers prior to last season's trade deadline, and he struggled down the stretch to the tune of a .242 batting average, four homers, 13 RBI and 10 steals in 41 games.
