McCollum making first appearance at All-Star weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. (February 4, 2016)Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum has been selected to compete in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge on Saturday, February 13, at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, the NBA announced today.

McCollum, 24, becomes just the second Trail Blazer in franchise history to compete in the Skills Challenge. Damian Lillard won the event as a rookie in 2012-13 in Houston, and teamed up with Utah guard Trey Burke in 2013-14 to claim another title in New Orleans.

In 48 games played this season, McCollum ranks second on the team in both scoring (20.9 ppg) and assists (4.3 apg). He is shooting a team-high 39.1% from beyond the three-point line.

McCollum recorded 35 points (14-28 FG), 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals against Sacramento on Dec. 27, making him the first NBA player to log at least 35 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals in a game since Kevin Garnett on Dec. 10, 2004.

Playing in his third NBA season, McCollum is ranked eighth in the NBA with 116 three-point field goals. He’s also scored 20 or more points on 23 different occasions in 2015-16.

Along with McCollum, Houston’s Patrick Beverley, the L.A. Lakers’ Jordan Clarkson, Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, Golden State’s Draymond Green, Boston’s Isaiah Thomas and Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns are also competing in the event.

The Taco Bell Skills Challenge is scheduled as the first of three events on State Farm All-Star Saturday night, which is set to air live on TNT at 5:00 p.m. (Pacific).

Yeah, this has always been a guards competition. Maybe they're changing the rules to let the big guys have a chance?

4 bigs and 4 smalls, I wonder if they'll have teams like last year? If so, I hope CJ is teamed up with Green (to win it) or Davis (to Recruit that dude!).

Wish he was in the 3 point shootout, but Portland will have at least one representative at the asg.

Congeats to CJ! The news got me thinking: the way Dame reacted early on I wonder if he asked not to be picked so he could rest his foot without begging out.

After Lillard made an ass out of himself, playing in almost all the All-Star weekend events in an ego trip and then winning none, let's hope that McCollum acquits himself well by specializing in just one event, like everyone else does.

That didn't happen. It wasn't an ego trip. He was invited. And he won the Skills challenge. Won it the year before too. As a rookie.

And I'm sure CJ would do the 3 point contest if he was invited.

They give the players a big Taco Bell meal an hour before they go on the court; the challenge is doing the course ... Cleanly.
