http://www.wired.com/2015/07/baseball-game-no-umpire/?mbid=social_fb I didn't read the article because fuck baseball. But I do like the idea of getting more consistent (and correct) calls from our circuit-based friends.
Dude, don't be rude. Baseball is all that gets me through the summer and and back into basketball season. Go Giants! And fuck the NFL.....
Don't know about computer assisted but I think they need an extra official on the sideline in front of a monitor to speed ish up and ensure correct calls.
I'd actually like calls to be made by officials who are OFF the court, who have access to a ton of different camera angles. Put 5 guys in a box with a bunch of monitors. Outfit arenas with a whole new network of cameras that can capture all the action on the court. Each of the 5 guys is assigned to watch one pair of players (one from each team). And they all have buttons to sound a horn and stop the clock when there's a game-changing infraction. They radio down to the floor refs, who then enforce the call and handle ball duties. This would also remove whining and arbitrary techs from the game, as the refs on the floor aren't the ones making the calls.
3 in the key, out of bounds, 3 point line, 10 second rule (or is it 8 now to get past midcourt?) These rules require zero interpretation, and would be great for a computer/camera to do. edit: and while we're at it, have the computer send a jolt of electricity through each of the refs on a 3rd 3 in the key by a single individual player in a half.
I say go the other way entirely. Give each team one rule they can bend at home, officially. In Memphis, there's no three in the key. In Portland, there are no moving picks. In Houston, rip-thru is allowed. In Utah, only white people are allowed to score.
If 3 seconds was called by the letter of the law and not advantage/disadvantage you'd never get to see the game. There would be no game. It would be referees blowing their whistles every single play.
