I have friends who were basically asked to stay in their villages until it is safer to travel. They are in several parts of Hebei Province. They tell me the situation with the virus is worsening.

So because I'm a big dumbass, am I right in thinking the virus itself isn't really that big of a deal. It's the underlying health of the individual and the lack of care that makes this so serious?

Lack of good info, especially from the China gov, makes it impossible to know how big a deal this virus is.

    What is known is.
There are 49,000 hospital beds in Wuhan. All were full weeks ago. Unknown thousands turned away without treatment, or, being tested for the virus. Many have died and buried without being tested for the virus.

Here is one "guess" at how big a deal this virus is, using known numbers. This virus maybe 20 to 30 times more likely to require hospitalization, then our flu virus.

Mortality rates increase based on health issues, and age by about the same 20 to 30 times the flu.

It's a very rapidly mutating virus. Something that we have no treatments for and very little experience in treating.

According to the googles, there are 19,300 hospital beds in Houston. Houston has a population of 2.3 million. So lets say only the old or unhealthy get sick. Let's say only that's only 1% of the population. That is 23,000 hospital beds needed. And that doesn't even take into account anyone else needing a hospitalization. It could be managed. Now if 2 out of every 100 people get sick... anarchy.

And we're not even talking about the resulting panic that would set in. Food and gas hoarding.

With the flu people can be treated at home. With the Coronavirus some people require isolated hospitalization.

Death toll now at 170, up from 126 same time yesterday.

While this virus is spreading much faster than the sars virus. Mortality rates appear to be much lower than sars.

Unless it continues to mutate. Similar to the flu vaccine, we can prevent the current variants but once it mutates further the vaccine can be considerably less effective.

You should have put your money on a Dame triple double last night. That probably would have been 100:1 odds. I called it on Tuesday and I wish I would have dropped all my savings on that bet.

Like many of you, I have many questions, but few solid answers. So if anything I post is not accurate, please please update with best info avalable.

One Doctor reports on why the Wuhan virus is contagious even before victims become sick.

He believes the virus incubates in the lower lungs. At this time, a person has the virus, but does not feel sick. A person can spread the virus before showing physical signs of bring sick by coughing.

The virus then spreads to the upper lungs and sinus cavities, which is the timeline when a patient feels sick.

I have been interested in taking an extended cruise vacation. The cruising industry is a mess right now. Not only because of this virus, but also because of tensions with Iran. Popular cruise destinations such as Dubai are near empty.

Cruise lines are darn near giving away quality vacations to get customers. Some fares now start at $26 per day, with many under $40. This includes all meals, lodging and entertainment.
