While I generally agree with your distaste for pushing to reopen schools, I think you're going a bit far in trivializing suicides, like it's just a normal thing that would happen either way. 20 suicides seems pretty extreme, not zoomers whining about being bored.

 

What about the 200 that will die during the first month back in class?

 

Not my intent to trivialize suicides, particularly in kids. I know that on-line learning is tough on kids and some more so than others. That said, mental health, particularly among those who have suicidal tendencies, is not a simple equation where if you make a policy change on having schools open suddenly those kids no longer have mental health issues. The point of my a bit too flippant-sounding post was that, while some kids are probably feeling isolated and sad because of that, there are likely others who like being away from the bullying that can happen in a school environment. Kids with mental health issues need to be identified and given the help that they need. I know that my grandson's school has kids talk with a counselor every week just to try to pick up on kids with problems so that they can get them the help they need. And, as far as mental health problems relating to Covid-19 isolation go, I know that there are many seniors who are stuck alone in their homes, unable to meet with loved ones in person and dealing with declining health and cognitive abilities. There aren't any easy answers here and there aren't going to be many winners until enough vaccine is available so that everyone who wants to be vaccinated can be.
