Didn't realize this was even a thing. What do you cap experts think? Will we have to give him this for him to finish his career here? And what does that do to us, cap wise, in regards to bringing in quality FAs? https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2018/11/nba-super-max-candidates-to-watch-in-201819.html
It's one of those situations that is supposed to help small market teams but will fuck us hard down the road. It's Dame so he's worth it though.
Who are these quality FA's you speak of? We would definitely be limited financially, but what are we going to spend it on? By time this kicks in, we would be out from under the huge contracts we gave Turner, Leonard, and Harkless. Some of the guys we draft have to contribute and Neil will have to continue to find quality players that other teams cast off.
I say you give Dame two contracts he can choose. Supermax, or the same rate he's at for 5 years and don't tell anyone you did it.
Portland needs to build through the Draft and keep the good/great players they have. If they do this and become successful winning in the playoffs and in contention for championships then the free agents will come. Worrying about cap seems premature and usually doesn't effect great teams because free agents take big cuts to come play there. Not to mention the revenue generated by winning a championship. This is the case with GS and was the case with SA and the Lakers before that. What we would have to look into is if in the future Dame would take certain cuts like Nowitzski and Duncan did late in their career?
While I do agree with a player like Dame you pay him whatever he earns, I don't think it is premature to consider the cap ramifications of doing so. GS got Curry, Klay, and Draymond through the draft but it was Curry's injury situation that allowed GS to get him at a bargain rate otherwise they wouldn't have had the space to sign Durant too. It sure helps to hit home runs in the draft because those guys can be retained no matter what the cap situation is. Now that Curry is on a Super Max we'll have to wait and see if that impacts them down the road. SA and LAL in the late 90's/early 2000's had different cap rules. Portland would need to hit a home run on non-lottery picks like SA did with Parker, Ginobili, and Kawhi. Sure, it is possible to pay Dame and still build a championship roster but the margin for error is very slim. Between trades, drafts, and free agents there can't really be anymore fuck ups and above that at least one future move has to result in another really good player coming of it.
The "Hitting Home Runs" in the draft part seems like the very best and almost only way the Blazers can get there. Just my take on it.
Whether or not we have to give it to him, is entirely up to Dame. I think. If he wants it, he gets it. But if anyone would sacrifice a little cheese for the team, it would be Dame.
If he doesn't does that lessen your opinion of him a little? He has a son to take care of and raise now.
He's already done it once. I don't need him to do it again to support the opinion of him I already have. That said, I wouldn't be even the slightest bit surprised if he does something similar once hie's supermax eligible.
If he keeps playing at this level, you do it. Just don't pay him the cheddar when he's 34 like the Rockets did with CP3.
Dame will be 31 years old when he could sign his 5 Year super Max Contract, which means at 36 years old his Salary will be 45 Million or more.
Yeah cause a one year old eats quite a bit and those shoes? Do you have any idea how much the television revenue should help the cap this year? Or do we have to wait till June to find most of that out?
