The Chicago Cubs and second baseman Darwin Barney avoided arbitration Thursday, agreeing to a one-year deal that a source tells ESPNChicago.com's Jesse Rogers is for $2.3 million. Barney, who won a Gold Glove in 2012 and was a finalist last season, batted just .208 with a .266 on-base percentage. He is the latest Cub to avoid arbitration, joining pitchers Travis Wood, Pedro Strop and James Russell, infielder Luis Valbuena and outfielders Justin Ruggiano and Nate Schierholtz.
