    NEW YORK -- Karl Malone left the U.S. Olympic team Wednesday after learning of the sudden death of his mother.


    Malone left the team hotel before practice and was flying home to Arkansas. It was not immediately known how long he would be away from the U.S. men's basketball team, which is in New York training for a qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico beginning Aug. 20.


    A USA Basketball spokesman said Shirley Jackson Malone, who had not been ill, evidently died of a heart attack. </div>

    I feel for Karl Malone's Family and I hope they can get throw this alright.

    i think Malone will still play. Even if he missed a game, i don't think they'd get a replacement.

    My thoughts go out to Karl and his family...I know what he is going through and it is tough

    There is no need for a replacement..he will be back..playing for his country is very important to him.But it is not like they badly need him with the superstars who are there

    I could see him playing thru it but also i could see him missing it for an appropriate period of mourning. i

    He might miss one or 2 games but a replacement ain't required.. He's gonna play thru it... Tough loss for him though..
