Blue Jays manager John Gibbons and third baseman Josh Donaldson had to be separated in the dugout during the Jays-Yankees afternoon game Wednesday.

The incident happened in the third inning, after Donaldson threw his bat into the dugout following a second straight strikeout against Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia.

A TV camera caught Gibbons going after Donaldson at the bat rack. The two got into a heated exchange, prompting Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Thole to step in and separate the two.

It’s likely Gibbons took exception with Donaldson because his bat could have shattered and hurt somebody nearby.

Donaldson, who was batting DH, scored in the Jays four-run, fifth inning, and Gibbons gave him a low five hand slap when he came back into the dugout.

Donaldson got jammed in an at-bat in the sixth, and was taken out of the game with a jammed right thumb.

The brief argument was nothing compared to the Gibbons-Ted Lilly exchange late in the 2006 season in Toronto.
