Man, I haven't thought about Shakey's Pizza in years. I think that I had my first pizza there. Bellagios is my go-to place for pizza in the Oregon City area.
Bellagios is one of the best chains. Shakeys was the shit though. Pietros is similar to shakeys and so is Stark St. If you lik that crispier crust. Im a pizza connoisseur. Ive managed or worked in over half of the places when I was younger. Peter Piper Pizza in CO, Shakeys, DOminos, Pizza Hut, Alfy's, Godfathers.... Ive done the rounds.
I went to school with the son of the owners of the local Shakeys. Really nice guy. Shakey's was great. His parents had a falling out with Shakeys corporate, and started their own, called it Izzy's after his mom. They expanded around the state but I noticed there aren't many Izzy's left.
Meh. Okay. Buffet is cool but the sauce wears on me because of the sweetness. The key to pizza is two things. The flavor of the sauce and the style of the crust. everything else is about the same. It’s those two items that separate good pizzas from bad.
The Abby’s Special is still the king of “franchise” pizzas.........but I have very fond memories of Shakey’s. We had one about 3 blocks away from where I grew up and Friday was my favorite night to go, as, being Catholic we could only have the shrimp or smoked oyster pizzas. Makes me salivate thinking about it. It’s damned hard to find a smoked oyster pizza these days......
I love all these pizza places especially Pietro's and Shakey's. Reminds me of my youth. No pizza like that in NYC. Oh, I like Round Table too.
They closed the one here in Bellingham, but there are still 11 locations. They are all-you-can-eat. http://izzyspizza.com/locations/
