First I love Ed. He's a warrior and best pure power forward on the team. Brings muscle and toughness to a soft Blazer team. He's a great role player for the salary we've been paying him. But's that the problem. How much is he going to demand as a free agent? He made $6.3 mill this season. I think we should only go $8 mill max for him. Anything else is too much for a backup power forward.
8 per is a good number Seems fair for both parties Bet he takes it. No other team is going to blow him away with an offer.
At his current salary? Stay. If he wants more he can go. Edit: And after reading the OP, I consider "current salary" to be +/- $1M of his actual salary and I thought he made a bit more than he did, so $8M would be my ceiling for him.
I think 8-9 mil per year is reasonable and I think Davis would accept that. He's a great role player but only plays about 23-26 minutes per game. I know Leonard was given a larger contract but as everyone has said, that was a mistake. After the initial big jump in salary cap, teams have become more frugal in what they dole out unless you are a super star. Look at what guys like Tyreke Evans got last year.
I agree that he deserves more than Leonard, but Leonard has already been paid. There are better players than Meyers all throughout the league that are paid less and are better as well. This is where it gets tricky as on one side the Blazers established a salary point, but I think they would admit that they over paid as well and the best approach is to determine market value on salaries throughout the league to similar players as opposed to what Blazers may have put out for another player. I definitely hope Davis is still here next year.
My bet is he will command around 10 million a year no less. I also would bet at his age he would want 4 years.
I like Ed, but the reality is we can’t afford him... and I’m pretty sure Swanigan can replicate his 5 pts and 7 rebounds after he gets a few games under his belt
Who is going to pay Ed more than the MLE? Those with cap space aren't spending it on Shirt Off, no matter how much I like him.
