<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">T he Flip Saunders era ended before it began. He'll get no going-away party. He'll get no news conference. Nobody will light candles or stand outside the Rose Garden holding a sign that reads, "We'll miss you, Flip." After recent reports that Saunders turned down the Trail Blazers' offer to coach, a source close to the decision at One Center Court insisted Tuesday that the team never offered Saunders the job. The source also said those charged with hiring the next Blazers coach are "looking in a different direction now." So long, Flip. As Neil Sedaka once sang: "Think of all we've been throoooough. . . . Breaking up is hard to . . . " Whatever. Saunders was fool's gold. And sometimes life's breakups have a way of working out for the best. Saunders' big name would have restored some esteem if that's what you needed, but he wasn't the right fit. What now? Well, the search is about to pick up some velocity. Owner Paul Allen has been in Europe and Los Angeles and is expected back today, which caused an NBA source to wonder if the Blazers are going to broaden their search or simply go with one of the few candidates they've already interviewed. "It all depends on Paul and what he decides," the source said. </div> Source
I heard he turned down five years, $40 million, which is really interesting...Portland is a decent squad that has some talent (Ratliff, Randolph, Telfair, Anderson), so I wonder why Flip would turn down the position, if these rumors are true...
I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit "guaranteed" him the position as their head coach. Even if Brown is healthy enough to return i think that Dumars wants to replace him.
This is smart move for Flip. Portland obviously isn't what he needs. This team has talent, but no teamwork. Detroit, Sacramento, and others are interested too. Flip would be better off with another team. But yeah, 40 Million is one hell of an offer if you ask me.
