"The Cardinals received word Sunday morning that former hitting coach Mitchell Page, who had battled alcohol problems several times in his life, had died at his Arizona home at age 59. No cause of death has been determined.

Page worked at the big-league level for the Cardinals from 2001-04 after being a minor league hitting instructor for the organization before that. He also was a minor league hitting instructor for the organization last spring and for the first month of the season at Class A Quad Cities.

But Page's alcohol issues bedeviled him, and the Cardinals twice parted ways with Page, who also coached with the Washington Nationals' organization.

Tony La Russa noted that Page was an important part of the Cardinals' three playoff appearances in four years during his tenure as the Cardinals' hitting coach. "He deserves credit," said La Russa. "He had good theories."

La Russa, after hearing of Page's death from general manager John Mozeliak, said, "What a shocker.

"He was a very passionate, caring, knowledgeable coach. You ask any of the kids he worked (with). They really loved him."

La Russa lamented that Page "could have taken better care of himself. He was a good man, a real good teammate."

Cardinals first-base coach Dave McKay, who was on the Cardinals' staff with Page and was an Oakland teammate with him in the early 1980s, said he had seen Page last fall in the Arizona Fall League where Page was filming prospects, and Page had told McKay he hoped to become more active in the church."

There's another thread dated the 13th.

I watched him play, and he was a good player. Seemed like a good guy, too.

    Sorry to hear this news.
