Former major league pitcher Brad Halsey died Friday in a recreational climbing accident near his New Braunfels, Texas home, according to a person close to Halsey's family.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because details of Halsey's death have not yet been made public.

The Comal (Texas) County Sheriff's Office is investigating Halsey's death and will not release any information until the investigation is complete, said Detective Juan Guerrero. The sheriff's office is working with a medical examiner in Lockhart, Texas, Guerrero said.

Halsey, who last pitched in the major leagues for the Oakland Athletics in 2006, was drafted and developed by the New York Yankees, and was part of a trade package that sent him to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Randy Johnson.
