Does it bother you when people say you're a college guy?

I was a college athlete for four years and a college coach for five. That's nine years of my life as opposed to 10 years as player and five years in the (Timberwolves) front office. Everything that I did at Iowa State was thought of as an NBA-type system, from the way we played, from the way we tried to approach things. My bench was set up like an NBA bench. I'm confident my transition will be smooth.

Not many first-year coaches inherit this strong a roster. What about it do you think you can improve?

I think the world of Tom Thibodeau. I think he's an excellent basketball coach. I was fortunate enough a couple years ago to spend time with him and talk philosophies. I'll always remember that. He has put some great things in place here with this team. A lot of guys he had for five years have great qualities. And a lot of that comes from Tom. I'm looking to build on that. I'm open-minded going into training camp. I think I'll be able to answer your question better once we get rolling with our guys. But I'm confident in my ability to put guys in positions where they play to their strengths and best utilize their skill sets. We had six players average double figures last year at Iowa State, and a lot of that was due to the ball movement, the player movement that we had on the offensive side. I try to have enough things on my plate where we can take advantage of a mismatch regardless of your position.

Can Derrick Rose still be an All-Star?

I love the way Derrick finished last year. He had explosiveness off the dribble getting into the paint. He made smart plays once he got into the paint. He hit some huge clutch shots. With the system we're going to put in and try to run and get him going downhill, I think that will be very good for Derrick. Being able to work with him on the floor already — I've had a couple sessions with him — I know he's very excited about this upcoming year. Once he goes out to California, I'm going to go spend some time with him out there. I'm also going to spend time with Jimmy (Butler) and Joakim (Noah) in California. I'm going to watch Pau Gasol practice with the Spanish national team in Spain. I look forward to spending quality time with these players and really building those relationships.
