Jelena Ostapenko stuns Simona Halep to win the French Open

From the carefree way that Jelena Ostapenko smacks a tennis ball, you would think no one was watching. Yet the unknown Latvian thrilled 15,000 fans on Court Philippe Chatrier, and millions of TV viewers, as she became the youngest grand slam champion since 2006.

Judging by her on-court interview, Ostapenko was as bewildered by her triumph as everyone else. She arrived here as the world No 47, hoping to get through a couple of rounds, or reach the second week at best. Her pre-tournament odds were 100-1, so this 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Simona Halep made her the most unlikely major winner that modern tennis has produced.

Ten French Open titles for Rafa even more impressive than it seems

    upload_2017-6-11_21-2-35.png

When Rafael Nadal lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the 2015 French Open and then pulled out of Roland Garros midway through the event a year later, it seemed that his Grand Slam-winning days would be found only on DVR. Injuries had become commonplace, and even in the rare instance when Nadal was healthy, his results were less than stellar.

And then this happened. Nadal dominated Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to win the French Open on Sunday. And if you haven't heard by now, that's 10 championships for Nadal at Roland Garros, which raises the question: How many more?
