Jaime Garcia struck out nine batters, a career-high, and allowed four hits as the Cardinals beat San Diego 2-0 on Sunday for their first win of the 2011 season.

It was his second career complete-game shutout.

Garcia was in trouble just once, in the sixth, when the Padres loaded the bases with one out. But former Cardinal Ryan Ludwick hit a hard shot to third that Daniel Descalso, making his first start of the season, snared and he raced to the bag to double off San Diego's Dustin Moseley to end the inning.

The Cards got their run in the fifth on a single by Lance Berkman. He took second on a wild pitch, third on an infield out and then scored on a single up the middle by Yadier Molina.

Garcia's previous high for strikeouts in a game was seven, which he did three times last season. He struck out seven in his final spring training game in Florida.

The Cards added a run in the eighth on singles by Skip Schumaker, Descalso and Ryan Theriot.
