<td><font face="verdana" size="1">The number 2 rated quarterback in the Class of 2009, Garrett Gilbert committed to Texas on February 2, 2008. He set the Texas high school single-season records for passing yards, attempts and completions in a season as a junior, completing more than 350 passes for more than 4,800 yards and a ridiculous 52 touchdowns. He also rushed for 400 yards.

Gilbert has all the natural tools a college wants in its signal caller. He is calm under pressure and doesn't rush anything when the pocket collapses. His footwork and mobility in the pocket is outstanding. His vision downfield is terrific and his throws are very easy for his receivers to catch. He throws a tremendously good spiral and possesses a very strong arm. Can make a play with his feet if needed. He needs to add a little bit more bulk in his final year of high school.</font></td>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>At the top of the list are Lake Travis' Garrett Gilbert, who committed to Texas on Thursday, and Shepard, both of whom will be on campus Sunday for the Longhorns' first junior day. Sulphur Springs' Tyrik Rollison, Wichita Falls Rider's Shavodrick Beaver and Brownwood's Casey Pachall also are rated among the state's top passers.

"From a depth standpoint, I'm not sure any other state can compete with Texas next year," said Jeremy Crabtree, Rivals.com's national recruiting reporter. "Whatever you're looking for in a quarterback prospect, you'll find that guy in Texas next year."

And that guy is going to be highly rated.

Gilbert, who set state records this past season for completions, attempts and yards, is ranked by Rivals.com as the state's No. 2 prospect and No. 12 overall in the country. Shepard is the state's No. 3 overall prospect.</div>

    Lake Travis SQT Preview

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Lake Travis: Despite being relegated to 7 on 7 center on May 31 due to his shoulder injury Garrett Gilbert managed to make an impact for LTHS as the Cavaliers romped to the Round Rock SQT title. Gilbert displayed big time leadership skills and was a coach on the field for his young teammates. Once he’s healthy Lake Travis will be a major force in 7 on 7 and could compete for the state title.</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Best storyline to watch in Texas this fall? The quarterbacks. Texas will take center stage in America for the abundance of top-flight recruits at the position. Leading the way are Austin Lake Travis' Garrett Gilbert (Texas), Russell Shepard of Houston Cypress Ridge (LSU) and Sulphur Springs' Tyrick Rollison.</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>2. Lake Travis Cavaliers: The best news for Lake Travis fans, 7 on 7 fans, and Texas Longhorn fans is that Garrett Gilbert recently started throwing again and is showing now ill effects after winter surgery to repair a labrum tear. Cade McCrary was one of Gilbert’s favorite targets last season and has been outstanding this summer. They have plenty of talent and depth and should be at the very least one of the final 16 teams left standing in the winner’s bracket on Saturday and with Gilbert at the helm the Cavaliers can win the whole thing.</div>

ESPN RISE Announces 2008 ELITE 11 Quarterback Field

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Garrett Gilbert, 6-4, 195 lbs., Austin (Texas) Lake Travis
A record-setting Texan with tremendous pocket-passing ability and deceptive athleticism. He emerged as a rising junior when he threw for 2,859 yards and 30 touchdowns and impressed on the Nike Camp and EA SPORTS Elite 11 regional tour. He's showed not only great skill but also intangibles and toughness last fall, leading his team to a state title despite suffering a shoulder early in the season that required surgery in the off-season. Despite not even turning 17 yet, is a confident, versatile and productive performer who set Texas state records last fall and should only get better as he matures. Son of former NFL quarterback Gale Gilbert. Committed to Texas way back in February over Texas A&M, Nebraska and a host of others.

2007 Stats: 359 of 555 passing for 4,826 yards and 52 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in 16 games and rushed for 400 yards and six scores.</div>

Several quarterbacks have big days to open Elite 11 | ESPN

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>One player we were very excited to see was Garrett Gilbert (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis). Gilbert was a ball boy at last year's Elite 11 and had a monster junior season. A shoulder injury and ensuing surgery threatened to cost Gilbert his entire summer, but he rallied and was back in action Monday.

The 6-3, 190-pound quarterback told us he was close to 100 percent but appeared to take it easy during most of the drills and never really aired it out, which was smart. Just like a running back hesitant to make that first cut following knee surgery, Gilbert will likely need some time before he's ready to cut it loose.</div>
