3 years seems reasonable. I don't expect him to play much as a rookie, but that gives him 2 more years to prove whether he is a keeper.
We used most of our MLE to sign a 2nd round draft pick to a guaranteed contract and he is making $40k less per season than our 1st round draft pick? We're paying him more than 6 of the 1st round draft picks this year?
That's a fair point. I was good with it being for 3 years - but why would you pay him more than players drafted ahead of him? It's not like Trent has a ton of leverage. This smacks of another case of NO doing a favor for an agent. Then again, I can't begrudge him making as much as Simons when he is more likely to actually contribute.
It's been that way for 2nd round picks for a few years now. The NBA needs to adress it in the next CBA but if Olshey didn't do it that way, Trent would be a free agent after 2 years.
Exactly this. And if he played well, a team could basically do what we did to Utah when we nabbed Matthews.
Matthews was undrafted. We hold Trent's draft rights. He can't play anywhere else in the NBA unless he takes what we're offering. Just seems like we offered more than the market, which seems like a pattern for Olshey. A pattern that is hurting our team.
The 200-300k per year that we are offering above Trent's market value is not the issue here. Nickle and dimeing these rookies or second pick is not the way to go with agents or give these young guns motivation. I don't have a problem with cutting 1 over paying vet (no.11) and over pay for a few of the young guys to give them extra motivation or appreciation to see what they have. Useless vets makes too much on our team. Not the rookies.
Motivation comes from being given a chance to play for his next contract. If he really needs to be overpaid to get motivated then that's a player you don't want near your roster.
