QUOTE

TORONTO (AP) -- At 20 games above .500 for the first time this season, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre is starting to feel comfortable talking about a playoff berth.
Jason Giambi hit a grand slam, Jorge Posada added a solo homer and the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-2 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory.
New York (82-62) has won 10 of its last 13 to move a season-high 20 games over .500. The Yankees are four games ahead of Detroit in the AL wild-card standings after the Tigers split a doubleheader with Texas on Tuesday.
"When you make 20, you have to be seriously considering playing in October," Torre said. "Right now we have our fate in our hands. If we go out there and keep winning ball games, we'll be fine."
Giambi, who was 2-for-27 over his past 10 games, went 1-for-3, walking and scoring in the second inning. The grand slam was his first of the season and 12th of his career. Doug Mientkiewicz replaced Giambi at first base in the seventh.

Source: Yahoo Sports

For a few years there, Mattingly put up some seriously good numbers. A lot like DiMaggio's.
Didn't have the longevity tho.

For as "bad" as a season the Yankees are having... they have a better record than the... Mets. Of course no one in the NY papers mentions that.
-Petey

heh heh
I remember when Steinbrenner tried to buy the top players from the championship A's teams from Finley. What a mess that was.

The Yankees have been on fire recently, and generally ever since the break. Phil Hughes was great today and continued to the trend of great pitching for the Yanks. If it wasn't for a couple of slumps, we might be talking about the Yanks winning the division as opposed to the Wild Card, but I'll be happy with either. After the way they started this year, I was worrying as to whether or not they'd even make the playoffs. Now though, with how great they've been recently and how awful Detroit and Seattle have been, there's no question in my mind.
Not to date myself too much... but... I remember sneaking a radio into school in 1st or 2nd grade so I could listen to the cardinals (gibson) and tigers (mcclain) play in the world series. Rooted for the major league team... I mean NL team. I also went to a washington senators game at RFK stadium. Yikes.

Mets supposedly are having a great season, and Yankees are having a horrible one. Yup.

Nice to see SC as a Yankee fan. Now we have 3!

I watch until after that slam. A big ol' pile of horse poop, that's what that was. I am enjoying watching Arod though (I keep waiting for him to royally fuck up and you know it's going to happen soon) and if he had hit the grand slam I probably wouldn't have mind.
My buddy was at the game and had a good time with the NY fans that came up. The 9/11 stuff seemed to be well done too.
