While teammates praised his character and work ethic and reporters admired his honesty, Cavaliers fans never forgave him for being the player obtained for Ron Harper, and opponents often complained about his aggressive style of play.

It was after an incident during a game in Orlando on April 10, 1996, that Ferry's reputation in the league became public.

With 2:53 left in the third quarter of a 116-104 loss to the Magic, Ferry and Orlando's Horace Grant got tangled up going for a rebound. Each player received a technical foul and Grant was ejected for throwing a punch and fined $5,000.

"We just got tangled up," Ferry said that night. "We got tangled up a few times tonight. Everything happened so quick. I couldn't give a good explanation of what happened after we got tangled up."

Grant had plenty to say, though.

"[Ferry] was doing some stuff out there all night long," Grant said after the game. "I tried to explain to [referee] Hugh Evans that he was doing it and he talked to him, and he calmed down a little bit. But he kept doing it. It was wrong on my behalf for throwing that . . ."

When asked what Ferry was doing, Grant said: "Pushing, shoving, throwing forearms. Understand that a guy can play hard. My reputation is playing hard, not dirty. He was playing dirty."

Added the Magic's Shaquille O'Neal: "Very dirty, sewer dirty. He's always been that way, even at Duke." </div> Source
