So this could be a good thing that tells us that he's looking to sign an extension right now. The other way to look at it is that he is going with an agency that values big markets and plays hardball. So do you think this means that it is more or less likely that Gary is on the team at the beginning of the season after next?
I'm fairly sure Gary can't sign an extension now or in the off-season. He has to complete his 3rd season first this could end up a repeat of the Allen Crabbe situation. He'll be RFA after next season so he'll be able to shop for offer sheets. All it takes is one team to overvalue him like the Nets did with Crabbe
I didn't realize he was a RFA after next season, hoopshype didn't say that and I hadn't looked closely enough at spotrac. I'm sure even if we could extend him Neil would let the season play out to see what he's worth, I didn't know that there were any restrictions on if you were or were not allowed to extend a player under contract the off season before that contract expired, I just assumed you could do that with anyone. All of that said, I really could see him doing very well this season and garnering a pretty big offer from another team although it could be a situation where teams don't want to put an offer sheet out just to get matched and so we get him for fair market value. I'm not worried about him leaving anymore now that I know he's a restricted free agent, I'm sure we won't lose him without something in return.
If a player's contract was 3-4 years, they're eligible to sign an extension after the 2nd year. So Trent is able to extend this off-season.
He was technically signed with part of the mle, so though it was his rookie contract, its handled a little differently than the normal "rookie scale" contracts.
just some history: the season the Blazers matched Crabbe's offer sheet, Dame & CJ were making a combined 28M and Paul Allen was alive. The season that Trent could have an offer sheet, Dame & CJ will be making 75M and PA is gone. Sure seems like different circumstances, and institutionally, the Blazers know that matching that Crabbe offer sheet was a giant mistake. and they wouldn't be dealing with Trent in a vacuum either. Hood will be UFA and Zach will be RFA at the same time. And Nurkic would be eligible for an extension too with only 1 year left on his deal before becoming UFA. Some team making a 20-25M/year offer to Trent could easily be a bridge too far edit: I looked it up in the CBA FAQ and RR7 is right, Trent could be extended this off-season. Technically, he could be extended right now if deals are allowed during the playoffs because the clause grants eligibility after the 2nd anniversary of signing the current contract. it might be that the Blazers will try to lock him up but I'd be surprised if they offered him a lot of money. And Trent would not have a lot of incentive to sign an extension if he wasn't offered a lot of money
