Crime will go back up in a couple months when people thought they didn't have to pay their back rent during the shutdown and end up getting evicted.
It's a "both" issue. When you make guns freely and easily available to buy for people who will use them, you get mass shootings. Guns don't fire themselves, but people without guns don't fire guns on crowds.
They will be sought out by the crazies who want to do such things and I don't think its realistic to get rid of all guns. So where does the line get drawn, with regards to 2nd amendment infringement?
Most "crazies" aren't connected criminals who will find guns on the black market. I agree that serious, career criminals probably will be able to get access to guns, but they're generally not the ones doing mass shootings. It's generally been some nut, often a teenager or young adult, who's filled with rage. Making them not legally purchasable through conventional, mainstream avenues would remove it as a possibility for the vast majority of them. Having gun regulations isn't any kind of second amendment infringement. The second amendment protects the rights of "well-regulated militias" (regulation is written straight into the text!) to possess firearms, not any random dude who wants one. That's very specific language, it isn't random or accidental.
I can't find stats on gun related deaths last year and how many were gang related vs mass shootings. Mass shootings get way more publicity, but I have a feeling that the total number of gun related deaths last year for gangs and robberies far exceeds those from mass shooters.
It's a people issue that use guns. I have no problem with owning guns, but i do have issues with lack of proper back ground checks and the type of weapons available to consumers. No excuse for not tightening up the restrictions.
Wait for it...the crime is coming. Another couple weeks in quarantine and people will start shooting each other. Right now people are staying away from each other, of course crime is down.
If its a hot dry summer and people are finally out of their homes but broke and jobless? Crime is going to soar through the roof.
