Rlected by the modern day committee with lee smith. IMO Baines is one of the weakest candidates ever and the fact he is in and Donnie baseball is not as an absolute joke. I don’t think he ever finished in the top 10 of an offensive category in any of his 22 years in baseball. The hall of the very good gets another member. Smith should have been in years ago.

Agree on all counts. Smith was as intimidating as any Reliever in his era.

    Baines a very weak HOF'r...

Criteria for Members has in many cases been screwy.
Mattingly vs Puckett. Near identical numbers, only WSeries separates the 2.

In the case of Baines one can't disallow Omar Vizquel and A. Beltre.
Some, not I, would use the same criteria to allow Johnny fkng Damon and Billy Buckner in....

Given the cadre of voters credentials I'd have to think the selection of Baines was mostly pimped by La Russa & Reinsdorf , premier members of the selection committee. Lee Smith was one who should have been there. In the case of Baines I'd have to say that he may not have been super HOF worthy in any given season but if one has longevity the numbers will get there. Though I thought Baines was good, I' thought others on that list to be more deserving.

Just saw Joe Torre on MLB Network. When questioned about the selection process his responses wer biibba bibba, uh, er, oh, hibbity hibbity, duh, maybe, perhaps, but claimed the votes cast wre confidential. maybe, perhaps yeah that buy had better peak, er uh. Gammons did not look like he bought that story hinting that the Bains Selection was something he (Gammons) could not agree with.

and odd selection no doubt in many ways. Does Baines get a puch cuz of his longetivity. 5 teams and 22 years of service; playing thru the age of 42. Was this confidential vote more like a "service medal"; a pat on the back into the HOF, or is this the new Mod Squad HOF (Modern Day HOF Panel) nod; giving an A for Affert....
Tho' Baines 2,866 Hits, in 2,830 games; was 46th overall... with a Career (nothing stellar)- .289 hitter

ntm- Baines was in the Post Season with 4 of those 5 Teams:
    Oak
    Chisox
    Cleveland
    Baltimore

He played in but One World Series, and got 1 Hit in 7 AB's at aged 31 Oakland vs Cincy. Vs Pinella's Fireball Reds, whadda show of shutting out those mighty Oakland Bats.....
Baines Post Season's less that WSeries were better than I expected, or remembered: Overall Post Season- 31 PS Games, a .324 B'avg...

I've never ever been a fan of Tony LaRussa's; not even when he was a Utility Player in those mighty KC and Oakland A's of 63 and 68 to 70 with a hiccup offing in 71 to Atlanta....

Imo, this is a Backdoor Chivas Regal Cubano Cigar Deal, imho.....

I like La Russa as much as Tommy Lasorda, both La-la-la men, and Joe's choking on his drink, hiccup....

Baines election is a fucking joke period. And Lou piniella just missed election by one friggin vote. ONE!!!! Both Donnie baseball and Keith Hernandez pissed on Baines as a ballplayer and should have been in way ahead of this reinsdorf orchestrated enshrinement of baines.
