I wasn't home for the first game today.... By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com DETROIT -- Phil Hughes won his third straight start and remained unbeaten this season as the Yankees defeated the Tigers, 8-0, on Wednesday night at Comerica Park, salvaging a split of their day-night doubleheader. The 23-year-old right-hander held Detroit to five hits through seven innings and threw 101 pitches, walking one and striking out eight. After the Yankees were stifled by Rick Porcello and two relievers in a 2-0 loss during Game 1 of the twin bill, New York touched Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman for two runs in seven innings, with Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira notching run-scoring hits. Brett Gardner stroked a one-out single in the first inning and stole second base, recording his 16th steal of the year, before scoring on A-Rod's single to right field. In the third inning, Derek Jeter walked and stole second base before scoring on Teixeira's hit to right. In the ninth inning, Francisco Cervelli plated the Yankees' third run with a one-out single to center field off Phil Coke, bringing home Randy Winn. Later in the frame, Gardner's third hit -- an infield single to second base with the bases loaded -- scored New York's fourth run. The next batter, Teixeira, continued the inning with a two-run single that blooped in front of Austin Jackson in center field, and A-Rod followed Teixeira with an RBI double to left field. Teixeira scored New York's final run on right-hander Alfredo Figaro's wild pitch during Winn's second at-bat of the ninth. Bonderman allowed five hits in a 99-pitch effort, walking one and striking out seven.
