"After he missed three games with a sore groin, about the last thing the Braves needed to see was Jason Heyward sprawled at home plate after being thrown out trying to score from first base.

That's what happened Sunday, when the 245-pound right fielder was thrown out at the plate after barreling around the basepaths on an Alex Gonzalez double to center field.

Heyward slid on his left side and tried to get around the tag, a scene that briefly caused a lump in his manager's throat.

"Yes, when he came around to the plate," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "All of a sudden your're going, 'get up, get up.' But then he got up, and he was fine.

"He's 21. Those guys that are 21 don't feel too much pain."

The Braves breathed easier after Heyward, a 2010 All-Star and Baseball America's Rookie of the Year, returned to the dugout unscathed.

"[Tested] right away," Heyward said, smiling over the incident after coming out of the game following his third plate appearances in the Braves' 5-0 win against the Nationals.

He went 1-for-1 with a walk and was hit by a pitch at the back of his lower left leg. He's in the lineup Monday for the Braves' road game against the Marlins in Jupiter, Fla."
