It turns out the Jets did not have to “Suck for Sam” to land USC quarterback Sam Darnold after all.

Gang Green selected Darnold with the No. 3-overall pick on Thursday night, a slight surprise because Darnold had been projected to go No. 1 by many people for the past month.

That changed in recent days when reports circulated the Browns would take Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield No. 1, which they did. When Saquon Barkley went to the Giants at No. 2, it cleared the way for the Jets to get Darnold, the man they hope can be the long-term answer at quarterback they have been searching for since Joe Namath left town four decades ago.

“When it looked like he was going to slide to us, we were pretty excited to take him,” Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said.

This is the sort of pick the Jets had in mind when they moved up from No. 6 to No. 3 in the draft in a trade with the Colts last month. They wanted to be in position to grab one of the top quarterbacks in the draft.

The Jets chose Darnold over UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen and Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen. There were some members of the organization who liked Rosen, but Darnold was the preference of Maccagnan. A source said Josh Allen was not really in the mix for the Jets and had it been a choice between Darnold and Baker Mayfield, the belief was the Jets would have taken Darnold. A source said the offensive coaching staff was not high on Mayfield.
